Year 2009- A Watershed or an ‘Also-Ran’
Each year comes with the fulfilling memory of the year past and the sweet anticipation of immediate future. The dusk of last year seems like being blessed with nostalgia and we humans motor ahead with life. Year 2009 is full of expectations. At the outset, American political circus has brought to the fore, a black man with a vision. Such vision would certainly establish new rule of the land and do away with many ideas that shouldn’t have been formed in the first place.
Barack Obama
Year 2009 seems like a year when a certain Mr. Barack Hussein Obama will have to use all his mental resources and a lot more to being the country out of recession. Sub prime crisis, real estate crash, automotive industry slump are cumulatively too hard to bear. Overall, we need respite and it has to come the Obama way.
Hollywood
It’s also a year for great Hollywood releases. We await “Harry Potter and the Half Blood
Prince” with bated breath. Hope that the movie does not fall flat on the face as the book has done extremely well as usual. David Fincher’s “ The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button “ and Terry Gilliam’s “ The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus” will be a treat to watch, especially as the later is the last performance of Deceased Heath Ledger.
“Nottingham” will be as eagerly anticipated as it would bring together once again the masterly duo of Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott. Reunion reminds of the Movie “Revolutionary Road” which is meant to be a rejoinder for the “Titanic” couple.
Music
Even on the music scene, things are looking bright. Britain is posting a re-entry with vengeance if this year’s Grammy is anything to go by. Apart from that, Amy Whinehouse, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga and many newbie’s are set to rock. Let’s not forget the quintessential Britney Spears who has flashed right in front of us with “Womanizer”. She plans to take the music scene by storm in the year 2009.
Environment
Environmentally and ecologically, this might be another sad year. Global warming has taken
unprecedented proportions and ice sheets are melting very fast. At the same time, greenhouse gases are breaking the ecological balance. More and more species are coming under the “protected” tag and the axe can fall on them any day.
Sports
In the sporting arena, US open is being expected with quite an unblinking eye, especially as the rules of the game have reversed. Its no more about the Swiss master alone, Federer is being challenged big time by Rafael Nadal and the display of Djokovic has also been awe-inspiring at times. Thus the tennis classic appears to be quite promising.
Misadventure
This was all about adventure. Now for the misadventure; year 2009 will see re-enforced
usage of weight loss pills, hoodias, white tea’s, Acai berries and a lot more. The world might find a way out of the economic catastrophe but a metabolic disaster is certainly on the cards. The pharmacies will again be making billions with this present fad of crash diets and miracle-causing weight loss pills.
