Sushil Kumar created yet more history for India when he clinched the Bronze medal today at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This Wrestler from Patiala (Punjab) defeated Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan 3-1 in the Men’s freestyle 66kg category.

Sushil had lost in the first round bout in 66kg freestyle wrestling against Andriy Stadnik of Ukraine. Sushil got another chance against Doug Schwab in the repechage Round 1. He defeated him 3 – 1. Then in the round 2 he defeated Albert Betyrov 3 -1 again to get a chance for a Bronze Medal Clash. He faced Leunid Spiridonov whom he defeated, 3 – 1, to win the BRONZE Medal.

With this win, Sushil won the first ever medal for India in Wrestling since 1952. This is also the first time since the 1952 Helsinki Olympics(when India won Gold- Hockey and Bronze- Wrestling [Khashaba Jadhav] in Men’s Freestyle Bantanweight) that India has won two medals at a single Olympics. This seems like one of the Best Olympics for India.

We offer our heartiest congratulations to this amazing wrestler who has done India so proud.

    Dear Juno,
Good you are fast with updates. Lets congratulate each other for this medal. One suggestion though, please correct the name of Helsenki bronze winner. He is Khashaba Jadhav not Jadav.

Thanks Kirti for pointing out the error. I have corrected it.

Also its the support of people like you and others who have shown such interests in our site that keeps us inspired.

Way to go India! And with the wrestlers still remaining, we can only hope to have more reasons to smile.

    Hi All,

    I have a question for EVERYONE…

Should we Indians be happy that this is by far our best performance at the Olympics- 3 medals out of a population os 1 billion? OR

    Should we be worried?

Just something for you all to think about…
