The last obstacle Michael Phelps has in his quest for the summit of Sporting Immortality is Ian Crocker. He will surely win the 200 meters Individual Medley and the 4 * 100 meter Relay (an event that USA has never lost in the Olympics in recent memory) .
But the only event where anyone has even a chance to deny Phelps in his race for 8 gold’s and hence beating Spitz’s record, is the 100 m Butterfly where Ian Crocker holds the World Record.(50.40 s). Phelps best ever time in the event is 50.77 s.
Phelps has actually beaten Crocker at both the Athens Olympics (by a margin .04 seconds) and the 2007 World Championships (by .05), in very close races. But the 100 meter butterfly is the only Individual event in which Crocker is taking part in Beijing and is mighty motivated to stop Phelps in his quest.
No one can blame Crocker if he wins, of denying his fellow American of perhaps the greatest achievement in Olympics History . It’s every man for himself and off course let the best man win this saturday morning.

UPDATE : There is a new contender in the block. In the qualification heats, Milorad Cavic has set a time of 50.76s which is better than Phelps best ever time . Phelps came in 50.87s and Crocker in at a dissapointing 51.95s. Either crocker was holding it back in the qualifiers which is usually the case or he is not in shape to be in contention on saturday. He was overall 13th.
SEMIFINALS UPDATE : Milorad Cavic again set a sub 51s time of 50.92 s ahead of Michael Phelps (50.97s) and Ian Crocker (51.27 s). This one tomorrow will be an amazing race. Watch it at 10.10 PM New York Time on Friday night.
FINALS – Michael Phelps beat Milorad Cavic in a controversial win in the mens 100 meter Butterfly. He came home in 50.58 seconds and cavic .01 secs back in 50.58. The serbian team have registered a protest against the timings. Crocker came in at a dissapointing 4th.
