The story reveals in the late ‘80s, Randy Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he survives out a living performance for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey.Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life — trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a blossoming romance with an exotic dancer (Marisa Tomei) who is ready to start a new life. Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy back into his world of wrestling, and the ring is the only place he’s ever found a dignity and self-esteem to make his comeback.
Very rarely an artistic come back is so pointed, so truthful and/or so honest. Mickey Rourke is extraordinary here; he’ll break your heart. You feel a chill run down your spine, the kind of chill you feel when confronted by an unvarnished truth. He brings distinct echoes of his own persona and career to the role of Randy “The Ram” Robinson. Yet, to be fair to screenwriter Robert D Siegel, it’s also a strong and nuanced piece of writing. Darren Aronofsky is definitely someone to watch and to follow. In “The Wrestler” the painful meeting between Ram and his daughter (played by Evan Rachel Wood) has the overwhelming weight of the truth without a hint of sentimentality. In some ways, this is his most accessible and human film, but it’s in no way a traditional crowd-pleaser. It’s also unlike Aronofsky has ever done before. The film was nominated for several awards and accolades, including Oscar for best performance by an actor in leading role and actress in a supporting role. Darren Aronofsky really packed it in, gives some excellent dramatic moments for the characters. As a viewer you sympathize and empathize with them really. Over all The Wrestler takes the viewer behind the scenes of a wrestling event. The film delights with backstage conversations. The viewer witnesses the professionalism of the wrestlers in the locker room, in contrast to the onstage showmanship in the ring.
