The film is the story about a teenage boy, Michael Berg (David Cross), and his lover, Hannah Smith (Kate Winslet). Set in post World War 2 Germany, Michael becomes ill, and Hannah, who is twice of his age, helps him. After recovering, he takes Hannah a bouquet of flowers in thanks. The two begin an unexpected and passionate affair. Michael returns every day after school. Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read tp, and he brings her great works of literature. Suddenly she moves away leaving Michael is heartbroken.
Eight years later when Michael attends Heidelberg Law School, he encounters Hannah in on trial as a war criminal. Hanna was responsible for burning Jewish women to death when she was a camp guard. Hanna is sentenced to life in prison. As an adult, Michael (Ralph Fiennes) re-establishes contact with her by reading books into a tape recorder and sending them to her in prison. Using them as a guide, Hanna teaches herself to read and write. After Hannah’s death, he confesses the truth to Hannah’s daughter. The film ends with Michael meeting his daughter; Julia. He takes her to Hannah’s grave and begins to tell her the story.
The film is very well written. Kate Winslet’s performance is remarkable, receiving the Oscar Award for best leading actress. Where as the stunning performance by David Cross is also powerful. Mirage enterprise has present a super hit film for their viewers.
