Slumdog Millionaire focuses on the dreams of three kids from Dharavi, the greatest slum in India. This sharp adaptation tells the tale of a young man, Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), who becomes a contestant on the Indian version of the hit game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? He is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees when the police arrest him on suspicion of cheating. As he is beaten into admitting that he “knew” the answers, the film darts back and forth in time to show how he ended up here and exactly where the truth lies. We see how Jamal and his brother, Salim (Madhur Mittal), joined Latika (Freida Pinto), grow up Dharavi. Later, we catch up with them in their teens as they fight for survival. Out of desperation their crimes get more intense. Each chapter of Jamal’s increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show’s seemingly impossible quiz. It’s clear he has learned what really counts.
The film is critically acclaimed around the world, winning 8 Oscar Awards. The direction is totally alive.
