The main character of the movie is named Daigo Kobayashi. He is a very devoted cellist in an orchestra. But the orchestra has been dissolved and Daigo is at a complete loss. He has no idea what to do next. Finally he decides to move back to his old hometown, with his wife and start life afresh. Daigo replies to an ad, which was titled ‘Departures’. He thought it was a job in a travel agency. But when he reached there, he realized that it was a job of a ‘Nokanshi’, which is actually to prepare the dead body for burial.
