The main character of the movie is named Daigo Kobayashi. He is a very talented cellist and a music lover. He works as a cellist in an orchestra. But suddenly the orchestra closes down and Daigo is left unemployed. He tries to search for jobs, but fails. He then goes back to his hometown, along with his wife. There he applies for a job under the title ‘Departures’. He thought that it would be a job in a traveling agency. But he got the job of a Nokanshi. He has to prepare the dead bodies for the burial. His wife hates the job, but Daigo takes pride in his job, as he believes he is helping the souls to migrate to the next world, smoothly.
