Coraline is the story of Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning), who moves with her parents (Teri Hatcher and John Hodgman) into an apartment in a dilapidated pink Victorian house. Coraline discovers a secret door in her new home leading to an alternate version of her life. This other version of her life reveals an Other Mother and Other Father who want Coraline to stay with them in their world. They promise to lavish love and attention on her in ways her real parents haven’t. As she spends more time in this Other World, Coraline sees the evil behind the button eyes and false smiles. Behind the mirror, Coraline meets the ghosts of three children (Aankha Neal, George Selick, and Hannah Kaiser) who the Other Mother lured into her world long ago. They can’t leave because the Other Mother has hidden their eyes (souls) but if Coraline can find their eyes, the ghosts can be released.
The entire vocal cast is outstanding, most notably Dakota Fanning’s dizzying portrayal of Coraline. Dakota Fanning does an excellent job bringing to life this young girl suddenly caught up in an extraordinary adventure on the road to dark fantasy world. Along with Hatcher and Hodgman, Ian McShane gives a marvelous performance. Selick has created his own classic which is a brilliant just like his other flicks. Apart from this, it is a mind-blowing 3D film among the current releases.
