The film is a high emotional drama of Dee Roberts (Nicole Beharie), a 24-year-old African-American mother of four working as a waitress in a small Texas town, is wrongly accused of being a drug dealer and dragged off to jail even though there is no evidence. The D.A. (Michael O’Keefe), the police used military-style tactics to intimidate poor, African-American residents of housing projects, arresting and indicting people based on the word of one dubious informant. Once indicted and with no money to hire competent representation, the pressure to take a plea bargain was intense. And the more people that pled guilty—the more “convictions” he had—the more money the DA was given from the federal government to fight his own war on drugs. The DA tries to force a guilty plea in return for release as a convicted felon, but she refuses and with the help of the ACLU and a former narcotics officer, she risks everything including custody of her kids to fight the Texas justice system. She’ll be locked away from her girls for more than ten years.
Newcomer Nicole Beharie is given the praiseful job of portraying the real-life Dee Roberts and does a nice job showing the determination of a woman struggling against racial bias in an attempt to clear her name. The always reliable Alfre Woodard is cast as her cautious mother but has relatively limited screen time. Michael O’Keefe comes off as a Southern stereotype, playing the powerful local D.A., the supporting standout is Tim Blake Nelson as the determined ACLU lawyer trying to win justice against long odds. American Violet was made by documentary filmmakers and it is based on true stories, but it’s not a documentary. Still, the reality of the tale is chilling—the war on drugs has gone awry and targeted some of society’s most vulnerable people, people like Dee Roberts. In many ways, the story of American Violet is familiar. American Violet is rated PG-13 for thematic material, violence, drug references and language. Most disturbing is the threat of child abuse. There are also scenes of violence during drug raids and a couple of domestic disturbances—nothing graphic, but jarring nonetheless. Racial tension leads to strong language. And, for obvious reasons, there is reference to drug use.
