Rituparno Ghosh who has given us some nice movies like Raincoat and Dahan comes out with his latest Drama "The Last Lear " which stars Amitabh Bachchan , Arjun Rampal, Preity Zinta, Divya Dutta, Shefali Shah among others.
Touted as one of the finest performances by the Big B in recent times, the movie is about Harish Mishra aka Harry (Bachchan), a Shakespearean mould theatre Actor who quits theatre in the 70’s when he was supposed to play his greatest role of King Lear. 30 years later, Siddharth(Rampal ) convinces him for playing the same role, but this time in a movie. Zinta plays Bachchan’s Co- Star.
The Last Lear is a study on the different aspects and artifices of theatre and cinema. Several scenes depict these subtleties like the scene in which Bachchan teaches zinta on how to modulate voices. (this he does in the mountains, amazing).
The Last Lear is an English film (no plans for an Hindi dubbed one as yet) and is produced by Arindam Chaudhuri (Planman Productions). It has already done film festivals circuits like Toronto, Rome and London where it was widely appreciated. It was shot in vivid locations of Kolkatta, Mussorie and Uttarakhand.
It is based on Utpal Dutt’s (famous actor in the old Hindi movie Golmaal) Bengali play Aajker Shahjahan and will be released on September 12th .
