Roger Federer was overcome with emotions after losing to Rafa Nadal in the 2009 Australian Open. Nadal had an Impressive Win over Roger Federer in a remarkable 5 Set Australian Open 2009 Final Matches, stopping Federer in his attempt to equal Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slams. A sobbing Federer congratulated Nadal on his deserving win while Nadal paid his tribute to this great player. They have both clearly shown that they are the best in the world, not just as the 2 Best tennis players but even in their respect for each other.

It broke my heart to see Roger Federer cry!! He is such a brilliant player. I root for Nadal but Federer with his unabashed display of emotions made me sad. Seeing Rogerer Federer in tears only reinforced the thrill of the Grand Slam and of Nadal’s brilliance.

Rafael Nadal defeated Rogerer Federer

Set Scores: 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2

i think anyone who has been a true athlete would understand how federer feels, like what rafa just said. i like the two players, because they are real gentlemen, they always have respect for each other. just like real athletes should be.

I think Rogerer Federer is a great athlete. I am a great Nadal fan! But to see Federer crying like that. I think immense strength to cry in front of millions….
But there was so much at stake for him….

  7. Matt Says: February 1st, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Fantastic game to watch ! Felt the pain and disappointment of Federer as he gave everything he had. If he could learn to adjust his game to handle the nerves on important points he could easily once again be number one. Chris Paul, extremely childish comments.

Sorry Guys I am an idiot. I shouldnt have written that. I am a complete a-hole

  10. denise Says: February 1st, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Oh please. For all the talk of Federer’s poise and gentility, he acted like nothing but a sore loser during the trophy presentation today. His childish sobbing stole Nadal’s hard-earned moment from him and distracted the crowd from giving Nadal what he deserved. Federer should have kept his emotions to himself and had his breakdown privately. The trophy presentation became about Roger being sad, and after fighting hard for nearly 10 hours in the semi and final, Nadal deserved to have that moment entirely for himself. So, shame shame shame on Roger “if I’m not happy, no one is” Federer. And cheers to the real gentleman, Rafael Nadal.

  11. chris paul Says: February 1st, 2009 at 7:58 pm

I think it was great match! Nadal surely deserved to win.. Even Federer acknowledged that. Thats what makes both these players great I feel. The way they fight on court and then respect each other!!!

I love to watch Nadal play..! What a great player. At the same time I pray that Federe gets to equal Pete Sampras’ record, cause I feel i anyone, its him who deserves it!

  14. Neon Tiger Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:07 pm

To chris paul YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

In Wimbledon 2005 (or 2006), Roger Federer won that grandslam title but he cried during the ceremony. Why? Cuz there were tennis legends watching. Same happend earlier where there were legends present including his idol Rod Laver. During his speech he said “TO THE LEGENDS THANK U SO MUCH FOR COMING, IT REALLY MEANS A LOT FOR ME”, then he cried again. Even he won tonight, I know he will still cry. You dickwad!

I just can’t believe how idiot u are. Nadal is the best player at the moment but Federer beat him in 2 sets u idiot, and he is almost there. But Nadal won. Another thing that made him cry is because THE TENNIS LEGENDS AND THE CROWD HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS THAT HE WILL WIN AND HE DIDN’T MEET THAT.

Hope u realised some dose of facts for your idiot face now chris paul

Denise – you obviously have never played a sport in your life. You should be embarrassed by what you wrote. DUMB BITCH.

  18. denise Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Well actually, Sally, I have played tennis competitively for 25 years, and I always respect my opponent enough not to show emotion on the court. If I win, I am modest and tell them what I thought they did well. If I lose, I don’t make excuses nor do I whine or weep. It’s disrespectful, and it detracts from their achievement. So, Denise, perhaps you cry when you win or lose, but I can tell you (without using crass profanity) that your opponent does not appreciate your outbursts. And Rafa did not appreciate Roger’s on-stage tantrum, either.

  19. maddy Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Great match! Both truely fabulous players! Great sportsmanship displayed by both Rafael and Roger.

  20. WanderingSplit Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Denise summed it best. Federer won 13 Slams and has 40 mill in the kitty. After all that, he takes away from Nadal. Emotional moment or not, he could’ve kept it together but instead chose to spread his rare low career point around.

  21. denise Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Thank you, Wandering Split. I am so tired of RFed and his almost complete lack of dignity when he loses. What we saw today was petulance and self-pity — that he’s still #2, that he probably will remain #2, that he didn’t reach Sampras’ record, that someone else has a better record at age 22 than he did. RFed is great and lovely when he wins. But he is a sore loser, and Nadal will never get that moment back. So, again I say, shame on him.

  22. sally* Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Why are you telling yourself that?? I think we’ll leave it here because you are not very bright and extremely narrow minded. You must be such a tough nut not to show any emotion . . . its really a great quality to have. . . BE PROUD!!

  23. WanderingSplit Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Thanks Denise. Ur first post is far more dignified than mine ;-)

  24. denise Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:44 pm

I’m telling myself that because I understand that I’m not the only person on the court and that we’ve both come out there wanting to win. I play outdoors on hard court surfaces in Texas, often in temperatures like we saw in Melbourne in the last two weeks. It’s hard work, and containing my emotion after a gruelling three-hour match in 105 degree weather has got nothing to do with lack of pride. In fact, it has to do with respect for myself and my opponent. And after all these years of having former opponents approach me at tournaments and thank me for my on-court presence and demeanor, I’m quite confident it’s the right approach. So, you go ahead and have your emotional outbursts and feel pride about it. But think about what I’ve said.

  25. maddy Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Federer is gr8 and would not have deliberatley taken anything away from Nadal’s victory. They show that they have so much respect for each other.

  26. denise Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:47 pm

Maddy, RFed is too self absorbed to realize exactly what he took from Nadal today. Rafa will never have that moment again, where he trumped all the critics and won his first hard court championship by totally changing his game and pushing himself well beyond normal limits. I’m not saying RFed isn’t a great player. He clearly is. But he is a sore loser, and his behavior today shows his lack of respect for the victor.

  27. denise Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:50 pm

WS, I agree with most of your first post re: devaluing the currency. Spot on. But really, it’s not the tears I object to. It’s the timing of them and the indulgence of them in a moment that wasn’t his.

  28. sally* Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:54 pm

ha ha ha ha ha definately sounds as though you have plenty of respect for yourself. Don’t keep fooling youself acting like your victories and losses are anything of the league of Federer or any other professional player. That would have been extremely overwhelming and everyone deals with situations differently. Anyway thats the last I will talk of it with you as all of your replies come back with information about you, and frankly I couldn’t care less about Denise from Texas.

  29. denise Says: February 1st, 2009 at 8:58 pm

That’s fine, Denise. You continue to think you’re open-minded and bright while you attack complete strangers with vulgarities. And one final tiny point: You’re the one who dismissed my opinion because I had “obviously never played a sport in my life,” and then you criticize my telling you otherwise. If you won’t let me defend myself against your vitriole, we can all see that you’re as great a competitor as RFed. Nice work.

  30. maddy Says: February 1st, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Nadal had his time. Fed cried in his speech time. He obviously didn’t cry because he lost, he has lost finals before and not reacted this way. It must have had a special meaning to him or something might be going on that we don’t know about. He couldn’t hold back which he cannot help. I have so much respect for both of them.

  31. jess Says: February 1st, 2009 at 9:01 pm

I nearly cried when i saw federer cried.I feel very sad for a guy who had made history wih 13 grand slams and being world number 1 for 200+weeks.All expectations are for him to win and i guess he himself never expected this outcome at all.Perhaps he thought he letdown his supporters and close ones,he lose a game which he shall not have lose,is age catching up on him??Is his reign over?To me,he’s a hero and certainly had left alot of good memories in us.

  32. WanderingSplit Says: February 1st, 2009 at 9:02 pm

Was nasty second half my post ;-)
Yeah Fed’s been on top so long he forgot it’s not all about him. He’ll learn.

  33. shasha Says: February 1st, 2009 at 9:15 pm

I felt so bad for him. I’m a rafa fan all the way, but I couldn’t help feeling sorry for federer. Everyone expecting so much of you. I think he even expected to win.

  34. CT Says: February 1st, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Yup – each time Rafa wins, he ends up having to be subdued because Roger is upset? This shows Rafa’s class but it’s really mking Roger look like a poor loser – just don’t make the whole ceremony about him! Wimble don was like that, so was last year’s Roland Garros -with Rafa really cutting down his victory celebrations.

When Roger won – no one else spoilt his victory. When Tiger loses (whenever that rare occassion was!), there’s no reports & pics of him sobbing!

RF should just congratulate Rafa, and say – Next time, dude!

    (i’m nadal fan)

  36. Bejoy Maniara Says: February 1st, 2009 at 9:35 pm

It’s hard to believe that you can’t comprehend why he is crying. You have to be empathetic. This was on of Federer’s most important matches. He lost to Nadal in the French Open finals, the Wimbledon finals, and now the Australian Open finals. He had the opportunity to have 16 grand slam titles yet he only came out with 13 because of those three losses. Not only that, Nadal replaced Federer as the #1 tennis player and Federer has been unable to reclaim it. If I were in Federer’s place, I would have been crying as well. I am very upset that Federer lost the Australian Open finals. However, I know that Federer has the potential to beat Nadal. This is all in Federer’s head. He feels that Nadal is unstoppable on clay and because of that he’s subconsciously thinking that Nadal is unstoppable everywhere. Once he gets that off of his mind, he will defeat Nadal. No matter what, I will always be a Roger Federer fan.

  37. tash Says: February 1st, 2009 at 9:49 pm

rafael nadal deserves to win the title .he fought hard and so did roger.we shouldnt say that roger was being selfish or stealling rafa’s limelight because who are we to judge him? we dont know if his intention was to have everyone focus on him being upset. from what i see ,roger has alot of emotions pent up and when the time came for him to speak on the microphone he just couldnt control it..shame on you ppl who can’t understand human emotions.so stop bashing federer and start being very glad for rafa’s winning.why do you have to be so critical and negative over something that has nothing to do with you? so unless you’re rafa, or roger or toni or mirka SHUT THE FUCK UP!!! oh yeah …congratulation rafa!! you made us very proud and i screamed the loudest when you won !!!!!

  39. WanderingSplit Says: February 1st, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Okay, so the pre-req for participation on a discussion forum is you gotta be Nadal, Federer or their partners.
These matches mean a lot to all those people who lose finals (many to Federer). But they seem to hold it together. It’s not as if his mother died. Tennis is not all about him & he must’ve known by not holding it together with everyone watching, he might end up being the focus. Should’ve left that to the locker room.

  40. WanderingSplit Says: February 1st, 2009 at 10:05 pm

I’m sure Federer has more supporters than nadal cos he’s a true gentleman. He’ll definitely bounce back stronger. Federer is the true champ! Period.

  45. cityrooster Says: February 1st, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Having been a professional athlete for 8 years I know the pain that Roger was feeling. Sometimes the hard work you put in, the hours of dedication, the mental preparation, all culminate into a letdown of major proportions, when you lose. Roger went into that match convinced he would win it. He knew what was on the line, Sampras’s record 14 major titles. It would have cemented Roger as the greatest player of all time. Remember that tennis is 80% mental, 20% talent. There are many players who have all the strokes,(Andy Roddick), can make any shot,(Andy Murray), but lack that killer instinct. Up until now no ones will was greater than Rogers, no ones resolve was stronger, no one had more confidence, and no one was more tenacious. That time has passed, Nadal is a machine, both physically and mentally. He literally intimidates Roger. I’m convinced after watching these two these past years that Roger is afraid of Raffy, afraid of his tenacity on the court, his mental strength, and his refusal to lose. There’s a mental road block there for Roger, and I’m afraid it’s one he will never overcome when it comes to Raffy.Federer hasn’t beaten him since the masters in China in 2007, some time ago. Raffy has just raised his mental capacities far above Rogers. I beleive that Roger has taken his game as far as it can go. He will not get any better, just older. A great rivalry and certainly it’s not over, I just don’t think federer can beat Raffy anymore.

  47. dk Says: February 1st, 2009 at 11:30 pm

I donot for a second believe that Roger Federer was trying to steal Nadal’s moment. It will always be Nadal who will go into history as the winner of the 2009 Australian Open Men’s Single title. People will remember Federer’s emotions only for a while.

In fact, Federer crying gave Nadal the opportunity to show what a gentle man he is. The way he took it and comforted Fed, just showed that he is not only a champion on court but a champion even off it. To see such maturity and character from someone who is just 22 is really amazing!

Federer might have cried, the people might have sympathized with Fed. But thats definitely not what he wanted. Even Federer’s sobs cannot for a moment affect my joy at Nadal winning because Federer crying so is much less important compared to Nadal’s tremendous victory.

  48. Sam Says: February 1st, 2009 at 11:42 pm

I totally agree with Denise. He broke down like a wimp because he lost to Rafa and lost his 14 titles dream or whatever. I loved the Fed Xpress before i saw his display in the trophy presentations.. but it showed how self indulgent he was and how he couldnt handle conceding rafa was better and that he won fairly. It was all about federer and his desire to remain king of tennis. And yes he did rob Rafa of his very hard fought glory. Oh boo hoo i lost – i have already won 50 mil in prize money but i dont want this young kid who has lost to me a thousand times and had to be content with hanging around in my shadow for years to win a trophy!!?? weak and selfish… disappointing Fed.

  49. Sam Says: February 1st, 2009 at 11:48 pm

and by the way you can be a pro athlete and still have the dignity and wisdom at the point of losing to remember how lucky you are making the squilions that you do and that after all it is only a game of tennis and its not that important in the scheme of things so dont use ‘oh hes a pro and he was upset cos he worked so hard’ as a reason. If the tables were reversed Rafa wouldnt have broken down like a sissybag and i’m sure he would have conceded defeat with dignity and a smile on his face. Sure he would have been devastated inside, but have the dignity to sob at home if you have to and be strong enough to allow your opponent their moment of glory. And its not like he hasnt won a million already!! If it was the first time MAYBE, but hes won 13 of them and he cries when he loses?? Oh boo hoo i’m not the greatest?? Pick yourself up fed, concede you were beaten by a better opponent and train harder to win the next one! I am a big fan of Fed tennis, but now having seen that, i’m not so sure. His Girlfriend was also disgusted by the look on her face. Who agrees with me??

  50. Silvia Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:03 am

I’m a Nadal fan and I had tears in my eyes when RF broke down. There’s no denying that RF is a GREAT champion but there’s no denying that Rafa is great too. Today it occured to me that had Nadal been only a few years older, RF would not have had the career he’s had so far! Let face it, this is how it works in tennis (and not only in tennis). RF had 5 or so unbeatable years – there was simply noone close to his level that could defeat him until Nadal. Roger should feel lucky for that. I’m not saying this to insult Roger. The same could and probably will happen to Nadal because hat’s the nature of the game and the world. Somebody better and younger ALWAYS comes along and dethrones you. I wish all the best to Nadal and no injuries and even if that happens, someone younger, hungrier and fresher come along, esp. in todays tenni that is so intense and consuming.

Anyway, I feel lucky the world has such a couple of GIANTS who take tennis to a genius level of sports and art. May we get many more epic games from these two.

  51. kirsty Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:07 am

what a great match, they both played amazingly but there could only be one winner and today nadal deserved it. the crying was unnesseseray, he knew before the match even began that this could have gone either way and he would have to deal with it, so why the sudden drama when he looses? i mean its not as if it was unexpected if he is playing against nadal. i thought he kind of ruined nadals moment in his self pity, was it much to ask for him to just keep a brave face? smile for nadal and etleast pretend he is happy for him? yes fair enough he wanted his 14th slam, but get a grip roger !
(and thats coming from a huge federer fan)

  52. Amit Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:14 am

    Frends….
U guys are saying fed should have cried or shouldn’t have cried. But these are d emotions which u cant control. M sure Federrer will feel embrassing time n again he will see the video taps…
Have u seen Mirka Vavrinec(Roger’s girlfriend) when he was crying. Even she was feeling sorry for him, that how a guy like him can outburst like this.
But m sure she understands him.
Now Roger has to show that he is true gentleman by coming out this shell of Nadal and by atleast winning one slam this year….
GO ROGER.. WE ARE ALL WITH YOU….

  53. Amit Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:18 am

Guyz who all are with me, who feels that Roger is going to bag atleast a Slam this year, to match 14 slams of Sampras….
Waiting for u guyz to vote on or against this one…
    waiting….
Say ROGER WILL or ROGER WONT….

  54. Andy Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:19 am

It was understandable that Roger was disappointed, but he should have been more professional and showed better sportsmanship rather than put Rafa in a position to feel badly and feel that he needed to apologize for his well-deserved win…. that is not right. Rafa proved that he is the better player, both physically and mentally, and he was able to beat Roger when he probably wasn’t even 100% physically because of this semi-final match. Roger has beaten many people for many years, and they have always be gracious in their losses, Roger needs to do the same and give someone else their moment. It’s not all about you, Roger!

  55. Silvia Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:32 am

You’re right, Andy. So many others cried and felt very frustrated while Roger mopped the floor with them for years – including Rafa.
I don’t really hold Roger’s conduct against him. He’s humam and he cracked. I guess it’s also very hard for him to lose because most of his career he almost always won. He really wanted this.

Amit, I think Roger has a very good chance at Wimbledon unless he’s so frightened of Rafa he’ll break there too. I think whoever said he’s afraid of Rafa is right. I think he’s lost his belief in himself that he could win against Rafa.

  56. Ciprian Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:36 am

Federer showed that this game is the love of his life, He’s not playing for the money anymore, just for the passion. He is a true champion, that lost his dearest title of them all, the Australian Open! Fedex is the game in flesh and bones. Congrats for the tears!

  57. fedex Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:47 am

I agree with Silvia that maybe if Nadal had been older Federer’s career wouldnot have been scripted the way it is today. Its always great to see a Nadal/Federer match.

Federer should take his loses in the right spirit. He has to regain his confidence. He was playing amazingly well all through out the tournament and I expected him to win today. But he had to overcome his “Nadal paranoia”. He should consider himself lucky that he has an opponent like Nadal. If Federer wins his 14th Grand Slam against Nadal, it will make his achievement even the more sweeter!! he has to understand that……

  58. Marianne Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:50 am

I agree with Denise and her original comment. Roger needs a sports psychologist and a coach. A few tears can be part of the loss, but anyone who breaks down to that extent needs some help. I have watched many tennis matches and never saw anything like that emotional display. Other players have privately had their emotions by covering their heads with a towel or allowing a shy tear to roll down a cheek. I am sure it was spontaneous, albeit inappropriate. It was uncomfortable for everyone.

  59. Beth Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:55 am

    Denise,

In case you did not hear Roger’s speech, he did say that he wanted to talk first so he would not take away from nadal.

here’s my last word on the situation after reading all this bull—- from people who have never even probably played little league, let alone major league sports. As a matter of fact I would go so far as to say that some of you people who are knocking Federer have never strived for anything in your lives, or you would have some minute understanding of this whole situation. You have no idea what goes into the making of a champion. Hell, I’ve seen 350 lb. linemen cry when they lose the superbowl, MLB players cry when they lose the World Series, hockey players cry when they lose the Stanley Cup. I never hear anyone calling them whimps. And all this bull—- about taking Raffys thunder away, are you nuts? Did you hear that crowd when Raffy was introduced as Champion. It diminshed nothing. I watched Raffys face when this was happening, his heart was going out to Roger, he knew what was on the line. As far as Raffy apologizing to Roger for winning, I’ve seen him do that twice before, it wasn’t because Roger cried, it’s because Raffy knows as a Champion what Roger was dealing with, and his emotions were also in play. A good man. So, from a person who was a professional athlete for 8 years, and one who has lost a Championship, one who has trained most of his life for that very day, I say this to you. You have no clue about the intensity, the pride, the hard work, the committment, or the expectations of a pro athlete. It’s easy to talk from where you’re sitting, on your livingroom couch, asking someone what a footfault is. So in closing, it is better to say nothing and be thought a fool, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

lol that denise person is right. Federer is a sore loser and stole the limelight from Nadal. If he had given his speech after Nadal’s I would have hated him forever… not that I don’t right now.

Nadal is gracious in victory and defeat. Federer is stupid – “only a few points here and there” lmao a few points – a few points can change a match in tennis – surely he knows this. surely he knows those few points were 19 break point opportunities. lol, sore loser in other words.

    go rafa :)

  66. David Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 5:41 am

I don’t know what to think! At first, I thought Fed was emotionally weak and mentally unstable. Rafa is in his head to such a degree that he could not take anymore of it. He better get a coach and be less stubborn. (Pat McEnroe commented that whenever Fed had a coach they were put off by how stubborn he was in taking advise.)

Now I think, as a great champion, he hates to lose so much and, furthermore, having his idol Rod Laver there to hand him a runner-up plate, just overcame him with such emotion and sadness, he couldn’t help himself.

He did take the moment away from Nadal, so that wasn’t very classy from someone who is described as a great champion because he exhibits such class.

I’m still a Federer fan but I am very disappointed in the way he handled himself afterward.

  67. ainoviere Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 5:52 am

What is it about Nadal that makes Federer fear him? The Roger that played yesterday was not the same man who crushed Roddick in straight sets. It was painful to watch that final set – by then it was like he had lost all hope.

While it would have been ideal for Roger to save his tears from the locker room, I understand how he may have been overwhelmed during that moment. How would you feel if you had five tennis legends come especially to see you play, only to feel as if you’d let them down?

I still think he still has it in him to win or two more slams, you can’t deny his natural talent when it comes to the game. Meanwhile Nadal just gives the game is all, so equally you can’t deny his victories. Particularly after his semi-final marathon with Verdasco; he deserved to win last night. His 2007 Wimbledon loss (which I thought he deserved to win) continues to haunt me to this day, which is why I can’t help cheer Nadal on when I see him play.

  68. Mary Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 7:49 am

I agree with Denise. He is a sore looser and extremely disrespectful of those he is not beating easily (like ARod). His so called respect for Rafa is all act, because Rafa is so humble and he (roger) knows how many fans he would loose if he went after Rafa. Just remind yourselves of the comments he made about Murrey’s game when he beat him at the beginning of the last year, and how insulted he was when was asked about Andy at AO. His game is big, but his ego is bigger!
And besides, he reminds me of my grandma with the need to comment on everything. When joker retired Rafa said something like “I don’t know, I haven’t spoken with him yet” and roger couldn’t wait to sent a few more spiteful arrows.
Anyhow, congratulations Rafa, you are the BE(A)ST! 22 years, 6 slams, keep ‘em coming.

  69. Amanda Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 8:01 am

Who cares is Roger broke down. He’s only human and was obviously overcome with emotions. Those of you who think he should have been a man and held it in give it a rest! A true man is one who can release his emotions. I was watching him during the whole presentation and he was trying hard to hold it in the whole time. It wasn’t like he just starting crying to steal the attention from Raff. He was overcome with emotions and just couldn’t hold it in anymore. Nothing wrong with that. Raff obivously understood which shows he is also a very humble athelete. I think it is great to see 2 top players taken things so graciously and not allowing their heads to blow up like other players I won’t mention.

I think the fan that shouted “out” in the point before the final one should be punched! Roger clearly stopped for that point, and the ump should have made a precedent by replaying the point. Would Fed have won the match? You never know, but at least he probably would have won the game and we would have had more tennis.

To lose (or postpone) a place in history is something to cry over. Roger is a great champion and will always be. He didn’t whine about bad calls or a skinned knee or anything….he was just venting.

  72. Hilda Kinyunyu Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 8:13 am

Shame on Federer for crying and taking from Nadal a well deserved win.
It was unsportsmanlike. Nadal worked his ass off to win that game and had a better mental presence at the end of the day.

So save the whimpering for the locker room Federer!

  74. Kelvin Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 8:29 am

Some people are able to contain their emotions and some people can’t. Some people can learn to contain their emotions through therapy and some people can’t. As human beings, we don’t have as much choice as we think we do. We are so often at the mercy of our genetics.

I’m one of those people who finds it virtually impossible keep a lid on my emotions in intense situations so I know exactly what Roger was feeling. The most frustrating thing is that the harder you try to contain your emotions, the more likely they are to overwhelm you.

Also, lots of top-class athletes are tortured souls. They strive so hard for perfection that it rips them apart when they aren’t able to attain it.

As for Roger stealing Raffa’s ‘moment’ – well, I guarantee you that nobody is more upset about that than Roger.

  75. Shopaholic~ Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 8:37 am

I think Fed’s tears are perfectly normal. He’s only human. I for one am a emotional person myself. And I PERFECTYLY entirely understand his feeling at that time. You cannot control something as overwhelming as that. So people like Denise and the likes, stop condemning someone for something that the person is. For a man to shed tears, shows he’s emotional and compassionate. He’s a good man thats for sure. His fiance is lucky to have him. Everyone is flawed. U might be a professional and not shed a single tear if u were him u may say, but who knows you might be flawed in the anger management side and bash your racquet on the ground when u lose?!? What I’m trying to say is nobody’s perfect, and please respect instead of condemn. Go give it a good think!

He is still the number 1 in my eyes. I cannot deny Nadal is an amazing player coz he clearly is, but I give advantage over the fact he’s younger and he goes to gym. Both players are awesome.

  76. WanderingSplit Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 8:58 am

I’m also one who’s been on Fed’s back here for crying, but someone pointed out how humble he is and cries when he wins lol. Still, should’ve left it to the locker room.

I swear i also heard some witch in the crowd call ‘out’ on Fed’s second last shot of the match – prolly she was trying to even up the score on that Nadal fan short time earlier. It didn’t put Nadal off though (ball hit his baseline & he got it back and Fed’s last shot was long).

Fed could’ve won, but when a really good opponent keeps up with him, he gets a bit nervous. Not choking, still plays some good points, but he’s not the same player as when he’s all over a lesser opponent. But that’s due to Nadal’s nerves of steel under pressure. However it also happened against Safin a few years back. Fed being so talented never had to scrap really hard like Nadal, so that’s prolly why Rafa is mentally tougher.

It’s the diff between them – just what’s between the ears. Perhaps now Fed’s underdog he’ll toughen up there too. Who knows – will be interesting to see.

Well, the only thing I can say is, watch the video again. When Federer came to talk after receiving the trophy, he was not sobbing, after some moments of crowd cheering for him, he just could not control his emotions and tears rolled down. Why a Legend like him will act like a crying baby to take away Nadal’s victory moments. No, he does not require. He is also a Legend, he has had his best moments. The thing is, he just could not control his tears and once they started rolling down, they broke the fence and kept coming in. This can happen to anybody. Even you n me. So don’t let down Federer or Nadal. They both are such great players that we should be thankful to them for their sportsmanship and generocity. We have something to good to learn from these LEGENDS. Kudos to Rog and Rafa :) WE LOVE YOU BOTH.

You guys need to stop hating on Federer. He is, until Rafa catches up to him, the best ever. No one has been more dominant in the sport of tennis ever. Not in such a short period of time. I mean, the guy loses in the finals and people act like it’s over?!?!?!. That is absurd! Federer played AWFUL today. Some of the credit has to be given to Nadal playing his heart out. But Federer serving 52% of first serves is a miserable performance. Especially for him. Let’s all take a second and realize that if Federer just played a little bit better, this match might have been over in 3 or 4 sets.

This is not the end of the Federer era. The guy is literally in EVERY major final. People need to cut him some slack. People just need to adjust to the idea of other people winning as well. Rafa has his number in the last year and change, but only barely. And his record against Federer in majors is deceiving. 4 of his 6 wins are at the French Open, his specialty They are 2-2 on other surfaces.

Federer is amazing. Allow him to be human. Sampras lost PLENTY of times. And did NOT make the Championship match PLENTY of times. Roger is the final EVERY time. Eventually he had to lose and not be so utterly dominant.

As for the crying, it was an emotional moment. He didn’t take away from Rafa. It was fine. Let him be. The Federer haters on this blog are morons.

  82. Shopaholic~ Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:02 pm

Ray, I bet you’re one of those people who mock others when they’re in a vulnerable state (be it…crying watsoever!)…whether its professional or unprofessional..its another thing altogether.

Mind you, Federer loses in the state of his mind and he made unforced errors which with a stroke of luck could have changed the entire thing the other way round in the 5th set. Its not like he was beaten flat by Nadal since the start. Were you even watching the match?

I still believe, he has aged whereas Nadal is still young and thriving at 22 yrs of age plus the gym sessions. A few years of age does make a difference in your 20’s in terms of stamina. I’m in my mid 20’s myself.

“Who does he think he is? Making a Nadal special moment into his own pathetic whine!”? quoted from you.
Do you think he feel any better himself, defeated by his emotion/tears? Easier said than done. You’re not in his shoes, who are you to judge? The hardwork, his own expectations, letting down his fans?

Man, u really know how to talk but dont think! Why do i even bother arguing with incompassionate people like you? Geez!

With all that said above, that does not mean I’m taking sides..coz I love both players, but I’ve been a longer Federer fan. And I love him not only coz of his achievements but the touch of finesse in his play.

  83. yogi Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 12:42 pm

    Well said Shopaholic !!
And Ray mind your words for a great player like Roger Federer. If you can not understand the feelings and emotions, you’r not a human being. The main thing for Roger to cry is, he knew there are legends of Tennis came in to watch his game and he could not win for them, he could not equal Pete Sampras’ record. If he was a sissy girl like, man he would have cried when he lost to Nadal 6-1,6-3,6-0 in the Paris title they played. You should see Federer was all smiling and making fun of himself for loosing on cheaply. Have a life Ray.

It is such a big thing for him to break the world record. How painful it would have been for him, wed cannot even imagine. His painful departure won him many more fans. Only now I want him to win more slams. From that moment I like him very much. Was it such a defining moment when he cried? did all others feel the same?

  85. yogi Says: February 2nd, 2009 at 1:57 pm

Yes Jas, even I felt the same. Anyways I was always a big fan of Roger but apreciated Nadal from time to time. His tears made me cry. I was sobbing for almost 30 mins until my baby consoled me with her smile.

Roger Fed just defined how much this sportz meant to him, how much a player can be attached to his game and how much can a defeat hurt. I was not just another cry oout for him, it was much more than that. He even did not wanted to snatch Nadal’s moment as when he said “I don’t want to have a last word and this man (nadal) deserves it”. Love you always Roger. :)

Not being afraid of crying is always important”.

I don’t understand the reactions condemning Roger. Like I said, I’ve been a diehard Rafa fan for years but I repect Roger a lot. He’s a remarkable player. From everything I saw along the years Roger is a very composed fellow, never puts a show on and isn’t a drama queen. I can’t believe he would cry like that on purpose to rain on Rafa’s parade. I believe he simply broke down and had a hard time dealing with the situation. So, he deserves the compassion.
We are all very lucky we have such two great champions who make tennis such an incredible game.

  89. Alfie Says: February 3rd, 2009 at 3:01 am

I have to agree that Federer showed a non sportsmanlike quality when he broke down and cried at the Australian Open presentation, and today he likely regrets loosing control of his emotions: it may even reflect on the reason he lost that final game…..nerves! RFED has had fairly smooth sailing until the appearance of Rafa NADAL, and now after this past year’s NADAL victories, we get to see another side of FEDERAL…his ability to handle ‘defeat’! Mr. NADAL on the other hand displayed a very keen sense of skill and determination both on the court and off. I was impressed with his sincerity in the acceptance of his trophy and in his concern from his defeated opponent. One rather crude comment was made that we as fans have no right to make judgement on the good or bad points on either NADAL or FEDERER. I beg to differ, it is our judgements, our armchair coaching, our likes and dislikes for the participants that have made this great game of tennis (as well as many sports) the kind of entertainment that attracts and encourages the participants to excel to their extreme for the fame and as well the fortune of winning the ultimate number 1. Good on ya, Rafa NADAL.
P.S. I wonder would Pete SAMPHRAS have been at home crying his eyes out if FEDERER and won and tied his record. I did almost cry myself for Patrick MacEnroe of ESPN when he realized his friend FEDERER had lost, what a terribly biased host he was yesterday. Sad SAD!

I agree with Maddie. There’s something going on with Federer we don’t know about emotionally. He obviously had the ability to win the 5th set as he had won 4th set 6-3. His personal life maybe? Admittedly, he should have taken a deep rest after the mono (I’ve had it). I deeply admire Nadal, but there’s something amazing about Federer. He’ll be back. Also, I like it when he cries if he wins or loses. A true man.

  92. Anon Says: February 3rd, 2009 at 6:30 am

I can’t remember a single guy who cried after he lost a grand slam final. Not a single one. After all those great agassi v sampras finals the loser never cried. Pat rafter never cried when he lost two wimbledon finals in a row, where in the second one he lost after something like 20 games in the 5th set. Goran Ivanisevic never cried when he kept on losing to sampras in the wimbledon finals, and this is coming from a guy that had never won a grandslam up until that point.

When federer cried it reminded me of how a 10 year old would react when he lost against the underdog in a junior tournament. The only difference is that federer is 27 years old and has already won 13 grand slams. Grow up Fed

Federer cried because it was at that point that it became obvious to everyone (including himself) that nadal is better than him. He has beaten him the last 5 times they’ve played and he lost in the finals of the last 3 grand slams to him. Fed realised that he can no longer be called the ‘greatest player ever’ undisputedly like jordan and tiger because they never had a rival who they used to always break down against. Federer should have accepted this fact, applauded nadal without breaking down in tears because things didn’t go his way for once (he reminds me of a very spoilt rich kid) and start looking forward to his next opportunity to play nadal because honestly it was a great match and if federer had cleared his head and wiped away his tears he would have realised there was only a very thin line between holding that crappy silver plate up and breaking down in tears and holding that gold cup above his head.

I look forward to seeing whether or no federer bounces back against nadal. It think if he grows up and learns to accept his defeats he still has a chance to get that no. 1 spot back.

Did anyone notice that he really struggled to compliment nadal in the post match press conference? After losing a match to guy who has obviously better than you saying: “i handed it to him’ is just not proffessional)

    Guys,

I was at the their finals match last weekend and firstly, it was such a great match and I didn’t regret every cent that I spent on it.

On Roger’s tears, it just happened that when MC presented Federer to the crowd, the crowd (including me, a Rafa fan, and also the 4 crazy Spaniards next to me that wouldn’t stop yelling for Rafa every time) stood up and applauded Roger. It was a very emotional moment. Imagine, you lost and still got a standing ovation. To be honest, I wouldn’t know how I would’ve felt if I were on his shoes. This is the friggin Australian Open final we’re talking about!!
And at that time, every emotion that he has managed to withhold at every final that he has lost to Nadal, broke free.

Also, I agree that the crowd is a bit one-sided. They were all cheering for Roger (including my girlfriend).
This is because, I think, that Roger has a great personality. He managed to joke with the crowd and also Jim Courier during the victory speeches. This captures the hearts of the Australian crowd which explains on why everyone seems to be going for Roger rather than Rafa.

Rafa, on the other hand, needs a better PR Manager. He rarely jokes or laughs unless Jim Courier provoked him to.
But that doesn’t mean that Rafa is not a great champion. He is, by consoling Federer and let him have his own moments shows what a true gentlemen/champion he is. And I’m SURE that Roger knows it too.

But, bear in mind, that when a great shot was made (either by Rafa or Roger), the crowd cheered enormously as if they enjoyed the match so much that they forgot who they’re rooting for (except for the fans that came in with flags and face-paints and also chest paints).

In my thoughts, Roger has such a connection with his fans (that I think no other tennis players had with their supporters) that he can’t overcome the feeling that he had disappointed them, which is why he cried. This is something that I have yet to see in Nadal. He rarely personally acknowledges the crowd for supporting him during the matches and therefore lacks the connection to his fans that Federer has with his fans.
For example, he’s the French Open champion, he could have learn some bloody French so that his victory speeches will not need to be translated every time. If I won 3 French Open already and confident that I’m going to win the next one, I will learn French, for sure.

Bear in mind, this is coming from a Rafa fan (70%) and an admirer of Roger (30%).

But yeap people love condemning the vulnerable, but never think twice about being in others shoes. How would one feel if u’re laughed at when you bare yourself? R u trying to say he’s not allowed to? Why would u call him a sore loser when its not the first time he lose to Nadal? And coz of who he is, even if he had won ..tears will still stream through his cheeks..coz its WHO he is.

Infact, I find him the most cool, calm and collected player among the rest of the screamers & shriekers. He made tennis looked like a form of art, not mainly about brutal strength & unnecessary screaming.

A lot of great posts here, pro and con. Would really like to invite a few of you out for a beer or two and to his a few tennis balls. Actually, I lost a lot of beer betting with Fed in this match. He was steamrolling and seemed unstoppable. Well, I discounted Nadal way too much … long 5-setter, playing on hard-court, so much at stake. I agree with most of the “crying was bad form” posts. I discussed with with other friends and pointed out other sports crying moments have generally been because of some other loss in their life … Woods and his dad, Sampras and his coach. This was Fed losing his trophy. Sorry. Man up. Watch Connors in his last big run at the US Open (quarters, I think). Incredible performance from a gritty old warrior. If Fed’s going to beat Nadal, he’s going to have to work twice as hard. Since he won’t really listen to anyone, that’s probably not going to happen, and he won’t realize it until it’s too late. I think it’s quite possible that his run at Pete’s record ends at 13. If Nadal’s body can hold up, he might be the guy who breaks it! That’s who I’m rooting for now. RF can open his sweater and hat shop. Oh, and what sealed my newfound Fed-hater status were his press conference comments … “The best player doesn’t always win” and “I handed it to him …” That’s about as low-class, low-rent as one can get. I’m still waiting for Wilander to comment on it. I don’t think he’s going to have a lot of sympathy for Fed’s wimpy weeping.

Its bullshit to say he cried because he was overwhelmed by the crowd cheering for him even though he lost (like some posters said) he cried because he lost. Im not saying its not ok for men to cry, but federer cried because he got beaten fair and square by a tennis player that is just better than him, plain and simple. That’s the definition of a ‘cry baby’.

If he cried coz he lose, shouldnt he be crying the moment nadal won? Or anytime before he walked up to the stage and those many breaks in between?

But hey, not until those heartfelt words by the emcee, and the standing ovation from the crowd..then should the emotions come flooding in? U’re just being sourgrape about him making Nadal’s victory look less grand.
I bet you didnt watch the entire match at all.

And to like-minded, the ‘best player doesnt always win’ line…well he’s applying that to himself and in general. And just coz of 2 words by Federer u switch ur sides like a flip of a coin. Shows how much “loyalty” u have in you. You’re probably those type who only goes for #1, whoever it may be…irregardless old or new.

  103. Chocoholic Says: February 4th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

*”many breaks” meaning we had a long 5-7 min commercial break on tv in between before the live ending ceremony starts..he got more than enough time to sob his arse off coz he LOSE. But nope he didnt, someone as reserve as him decided to be evil and spoil Nadals moment by sobbing in front of everyone to see right?!?

    urgh…Some common sense please people!!

hey guys, quit bickering over the AO final.. move on..

  105. Silvia Says: February 4th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

likeminded, if what you say is true about the things he said then I take all my sympathy back! That is SOOOO low!!! To talk about your opponent that way is disgusting. To belittle Rafa (or anyone else) like that??? “HE gave him the match”??? He didn’t “give” anything! Rafa took it from him because he was better! MAN, YOU lost the game cause you weren’t good enough!
It just proves that all his “gemtleman” image was SHIT. While he had no real rivals, while HE “massacred” all his opponents on all courts for 5-6 years he could afford to be “gracious” and play humble. Now, that somebody can fight back and defeat him, his true colors come out. Flash news Roger – the world doesn’t awe you jackshit! YOU are not alone in the world. I believe in God and Karma, so maybe he wasn’t destined to break that record??? Maybe when you’re such a fake, you don’t deserve it?
Roger is exhibiting a harsh case of HUBRIS!!! I’m very disappointed in him as a human. I will never root for him to win any grandslam again.

  106. fedex Says: February 4th, 2009 at 11:37 pm

At the press conference Federer said that He played terrible in the last set and sort of handed him the match. Watch the new video on top….. the last few mins of the video contain Federer’s words

  107. anon Says: February 5th, 2009 at 5:33 am

fedex – “handed him the match”. Let’s not forget that champions are able to get through their matches even if their best tennis isnt there. To say he handed nadal the match is so high and mighty of him. Nadal was playing great tennis and was and is mentally tougher than federer. Federers few and far praise(s) for nadals game shows how selfcentred he is.

Like silvia said – there is no grace or humility in federer. hope he never wins a grand slam again. Now with Murray and many up and comers federers chances are slimming considerably.

AND how long do u suffer mono for? i dont think a whole year. federer cannot blame the 2nd half of the ‘08 season on mono. dismal loss to murray and simon – 7-5 in the third set shows how mentally weak he is.

federer is a very skilled player. but his personality is totally off-putting.

  108. Karta Says: February 5th, 2009 at 5:43 am

well, I’m not trying to defend Federer here. But my understanding that maybe the sentence “I kinda handed him the match” is taken a bit out of context. I think what he meant was that he played and served so terribly during the last set that he might as well just handed Nadal the match.
People, don’t be prejudiced by what you hear from others’ posts. Take it from another angle and then you can analyze the situation carefully and neutrally.

Federer is a great player, professionally and mentally. He never hurt his racket, he never shows emotion on court which is a VERY big weapon of his, as for Nadal too which rarely shows emotions other than fist-pumps.
Never let your opponent know that you’re disappointed with yourself during the game. Like I said, after the game, all of that disappointments during the game just came rushing out.

  109. anon Says: February 5th, 2009 at 6:20 am

Karta – no no no. You should take a bit of ur own medicine and try a different ‘angle’. I’m assuming you haven’t read the full transcript or seen the post-match interview ? because you obviously do not know the context of how it was said.

karta quote: “I think what he meant was that he played and served so terribly during the last set that he might as well just handed Nadal the match.” – thats what u think, and ure entitled to ur opinion but ure the first thats said that.

fed was stuck up – disappointed in himself for the way he played. he thinks his mistakes were the sole reason for his loss instead of nadals brilliance and fight.

  110. Karta Says: February 5th, 2009 at 6:30 am

Why are you being so hostile to me? I thought this was a healthy debate.
I guess his statements are ambiguous and open to interpretation. At least that’s how I interpret his statements. You understood it differently, it’s alright. But no need to attack my opinion…

  111. Karta Says: February 5th, 2009 at 6:41 am

If I may add, yes.. statistically, his mistakes were the major reason that he lost the match. Look at the first serve percentage, unforced errors.

Nadal’s tactic was to force Federer to hit the net or hit long and it was bloody working!
Did you see where Nadal was standing when he was about to receive the serve? Way behind the baseline. His tactic for that night was defense and give as many shots as possible to Federer’s backhand.
    Nadal’s tactics are Nadal’s brilliance.
Let’s not forget that I’m a Nadal fan and I’m not trying to defend Roger on this.
On one hand, Nadal’s tactic was effective.
On the other hand, Roger’s mistakes played a major part in his loss.

  112. anon Says: February 5th, 2009 at 7:48 am

lol, no, i shouldnt have been as ‘hostile’. what i was getting at was that federer believes his SOLE reason for losing was because of his serve and unforced errors.

his serve was off. why? a reason could be that nadal was one of the best returners of the game in 08 – a stat found on the atp website. which placed more pressure on feddie.

feds mistakes are because of his mental weakness – if u think not they its his skill, which it isnt. theres constant pressure on him playing nadal. this mental block caused him to lose, not to mention a singled-handed backhand that is attackable IN COMPARISON to the top players.

in all feddie should go cry elsewhere and let nadal bask in his hard earned glory. a player should never have to apologise because he won nor should the attention be placed on the loser instead of the winner and his/her hard earned victory.

  113. Karta Says: February 5th, 2009 at 8:01 am

well, I hear ya. The thing is that why he wanted to humiliate himself in front of 15000 people by crying. That could not have been on his script to take Nadal’s glory away…
The fact is that because we are assuming here on various reasons on why he cried. Only Federer himself will know why.. and I think’s it’s innocence until proven guilty…

  114. Roger Says: February 5th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

wow , very vehement arguments here .but i support what likeminded and anon said .
Roger ’s tears can only prove he is really a big baby and Nadal is really powerful!

I have no respect fir him after his comments in the post march press confrence. I hope the faggot never breaks the Sampras record of 14 slams.

  116. ARoper Says: February 6th, 2009 at 11:05 am

I’ve been a fan of Federer since he turned pro and have NEVER liked Nadal. But gradually over the years and all the praise and accolades, Fed’s ego has grown. These days, if a player like Murray is the bookies fav over him, he whinges and pouts about it and now, if he doesn’t win a match, he crys like a baby. He also had the hide to say in an interview after the final that ‘not always the better player wins in five set matches’) or something to that effect. His way of saying that Nadal wasn’t better than him. Well, I’m sorry Federer. You couldn’t break serve on several occasions and couldn’t even hold your own. The better player won on the day – Nadal.

  120. Rome Says: February 6th, 2009 at 7:02 pm

I think Federer needs an Uncle Toni right now. Rafa’s coach always tells his nephew after win -’If you happen to think you are an important guy, remember you are just a young man who hits a tennis ball’.

Rafa’s humbleness and sportmanlike comes partly from his temperament, but partly from a sound education in a family of professional sportmen. Uncle Toni’s mantra is the best medicine to stay humble.

Federer, look for an Uncle Toni. You need it!!!!

  121. Az Says: February 6th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

  122. kimikimi Says: February 6th, 2009 at 10:06 pm

why whould roger be purposely crying to take away rafa’s moment? you tell me. he cried because he couldnt hold it back. he really wanted this win. he was dissapointed in himself because it would have been a historic event if he would have won. and the fact that he didnt crushed him. he cant hold it back and go in the locker rooms and cry. he has to stay out there and talk and congratulate rafa. who said people cant cry when they lose? why can men cry when they win, but not otherwise? do you think he WANTED to humiliate himself and make people think he stole rafa’s limelight? i wouldnt. i would cry because i had to. rafa still won. federer crying didnt change that.

  123. Az Says: February 6th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

bottom line is federer is a selfish,GAY faggot who cries a lot…..

  124. T Fan Says: February 7th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

It’s too harsh to say that federer intentionally stole rafael’s limelight for crying. U can control emotions. But i do agree with many that federer is an arrogant egoistic sore loser. Saying that the nadal’s five hour+ semi final and the one day less rest doesn’t affect nadal (Funny that with extra day rest and less taxing 3 sets semi final, federer was the one who looked beat in the final). Nadal is tough like any other guys. (Pls name me one guy as tough as him) The Best player doesn’t necessary wins. (come on.. Nadal was clearly superior in the final).
Talent and sportsmanship is 2 independent attributes. U can have one without the other. I dare say that only Nadal have both.

  125. Az Says: February 15th, 2009 at 9:25 pm

who agrees that federer is a faggot?

  126. Ej Says: February 19th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Its funny how much these comments can digress. Death threats seem rather an extreme reaction. It just seems some people can’t except other peoples interpretation of events. For me this final did seem like “a changing of guard” almost. It started bringing into question Rafa’s potential to be “the greatest tennis player ever”:D. But tennis is an everchanging game so i’ll leave it a couple of years before i write off Federer, but to me Rafa is the greatest player ever. Oh my days i’m such a sop and now i’m the one digressing, apologies back to topic. I’m a huge Rafa fan, so i think theres obviously going to be some sort of bias from my point of view but here goes. I think that moment did belong to Rafa, In that match he proved just how much of a fighter he is, and no one can deny that he earned that match, and the celebrations that should have gone with it(but knowing rafa they would have been quite modest anyway). But it didn’t quite turn out that way, what resulted was Roger breaking down, and showing just how painful this loss was, and what its effect will be on him mentally. I do feel like Fed could have timed it a little better, he can time a serve perfectly(normally). So why not his emotions? – his eyes welling up showed just how his emotions have been welling up. A recipe to leave a man completely stripped at a final? Add one immense opponent, add several of your sporting heroes, add the occasion and its surface, add the mental edge its given the opponent, add the loss and add a touch of pride being dented? Is it really any wonder why Fed cried? That said You’ve gotta respect him, its gotta be hard to let loose like that infront of millions of people, and well if he was gonna “steal” Rafa’s moment away he did it in style. As always Rafa showed what a true gentleman he was by his respect for Roger, and consoling him. All in all i think Rafa still got his moment, maybe in a different way than anyone expected, but he came out a truer champion than ever because of it. As for the final itself? Might not have been as “EPIC” in comparison to Wimbers, but it did make some good viewing no? as the lovable spaniard would say :D .

  127. m@nu Says: March 8th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

…I think roger and rafa are from a different planet…roger had his time earlier…now rafa is cherishing his…the emotions of a great champion can only be measured by himself…

  128. The great Says: June 6th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

I think you guys carried too far. What was wrong with Fed saying that he was disappointed in himself for the way he played? And even if he thinks that his mistakes were the sole reasons he lost, nothing is wrong. He was just blaming himself for not doing better. It’s just like when you attempted on a maths question in your final exams and you know you have practiced that before, but just that you couldnt score because you made some errors in the final steps. You can’t just simply imply that he was discounting Nadal’s brilliance. Both Nadal and Fed are great players and i think you guys just interprete too much. Overall, Nadal is better at matching Fed’s game but Fed is better than Nadal in matching the rest of the players. This is how they match up until now.

  129. Anders Says: September 11th, 2009 at 12:35 am

I don’t know whether he’s cry baby or no. But I have a sense that he’s a selfish person, arrogant ( maybe he won too much ). It’s not like he has never a single slam. Come on guys, this guy has 13 Gs and i’m sure he’s hurtful after losing. Every player who lose Grand slam final is hurtful too, didn’t A-Rod hurt? after losing 1000 times to Federer in final? But has him ever cried and stolen Federer’s victory? No? Because Roddick , Nadal, Djokovic, etc is a good loser

  130. Matt C Says: September 14th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

I just want to chime in. I CANNOT believe some of these comments. Roger has been a CLASS ACT from day one of tennis, and he is an incredible asset and role-model to the game. He is also an emotional person, as evident by virtually every win he makes. This was a particularly historic match (hence why all the legends were out- the MC even said that it was the first time all had come out). This win would have put Roger above Sampras in terms of titles won. WHY oh why do you guys think he cried ON PURPOSE!!!! It was obvious that his voice cracked, and then he literally started sobbing UNCONTROLLABLY. It was not intentional, and I cringe when someone says he should have “waited until he got to the locker room.” COME ON???? He was overwhelmed and couldn’t help it. And on top of it, his class and civility remained when he immediately said: “I don’t want to have the last word, this guy deserves it”!!!! You can’t say he’s arrogant or an ass after that. PLUS, he chocked up when he was thanking the legends and said “You know how much this means to me” and his voice cracked. This had nothing to do with Rafa winning; it had to do with Roger being emotional and it coming out. All the men out there who say he’s not a man because of this should be ashamed. He’s a star athlete, with a beautiful wife and probably the greatest player of all time… And he’s not a man for crying??????? Are you guys living in the 18th century. Give me a break! To me, and I think to millions of others, this stunning trophy presentation made me love and respect both of these class acts just a little bit more. Even reading that people are criticizing Roger for his public display of emotion makes me sad for humanity.

  131. Matt C Says: September 14th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

One more thing…. I don’t know if the negativity is based on a bias because the comments are from fans of other players, but as a tennis fan who simply loves the sport itself, I can only say that the sport is a MUCH better event due to the likes of Roger and Rafa. These two display such humanness and compassion, and they always have. I simply love Rafa’s modesty and shyness, and his complete empathy, particularly in this situation. I also love Roger’s intelligence, passion for the sport, dedication to his wife (with whom he has been for years and years, and sticking up for her when others were stupidly calling her “fat”). And I respect his total sportsmanship. Roger has maybe lost his temper once or twice on court, and even then it’s very very minor… there are no theatrics with him, and that is why he is so beloved by fellow players and tennis critics alike. I don’t understand where these negative comments are coming from. I have never seen/heard Roger be arrogant. When you’ve won as much as he has, you have to discuss those wins, and it’s like he’s damned if he does and he’s damned if he doesn’t. The same people who speak negatively of him probably loved John tantrum McEnroe, or Serena “ball down your fucking throat” Williams. Both great players, no doubt about it, but Roger and Rafa are that rare mix of talent AND class. I wish more athletes (and people) were more like them.
