Everybody knows Rajnikanth was born and brought up in Bangalore, Karnataka. I knew he could speak Kannada fluently but had never heard him speak. He had done Kannada movies a very long time ago, but Kannadigas had not heard Rajni speak Kannada in public for a long time.
The Hogenakkal controversy forced Rajnikanth to take sides. Forced by the politics played by Sarath Kumar, he attended a Anti – Kannada rally in TN. Sarath Kumar had said “All technicians and artists of Tamil industry who are of Karnataka origin must also participate in the Friday (April 4) protest, failure of which would lead to non-coperation from the industry.”
There Rajnikanth said in his speech that hooligans should be kicked. The entire Kannada media highlighted this and the ire against Rajni spread in Karnataka. With his Kuchelan about to release he had to settle the matter.
Rajni spoke to the media and explained his stand and apologised to the Kannada public in general.
I personally like Rajni. He is a Tamilian now because TN has made him a superstar. He is a kind hearted simple man. But this episode has ruined his image in both TN and Karnataka. I hope in the future KRV etc organisations do not take advantage of his stardom. Other TN film stars wait for every chance to point out that he is a Kannadiga . Rajni is in a precarious catch 9 situation.
