The Badshah of Bollywood is at it again – and this time in a whole new avatar! Right from the angry protagonist in Baazigar who is out for revenge, to the college going, romantic dude Rahul in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, to the cruel and sadistic Don in Don, SRK has truly experimented with his look, acting and persona. Even in the film Devdas, SRK showed an overly emotional side, drenched in alcoholism, as his lady love stood helplessly watching. This time, SRK is all set to present yet another new side of his persona – in the upcoming movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Produced under the Yash Raj banner, the film has been going great guns in terms of publicity and promos. The songs have already started becoming a rage with the people and it remains to be seen if this new and modest avatar of SRK will be appreciated by the masses.
The plot: don’t read if you plan to see the movie!
Well, we warned you but as they say curiosity killed the cat so here goes. SRK is supposedly a very mundane guy who lives an extremely ordinary and boring life, working in the electricity board. His wife is played by Anushka Sharma, who is much younger than him and wants a little more excitement and unpredictability in their life. That is when a contest known as ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ comes into the picture. This is a dance contest and SRK realizes this maybe his chance to help his wife’s wishes come true. So, stepping out of his regular trousers and sloppy shirt, in comes a whole new swanky SRK replete with jeans, fitted t-shirts and gelled, slick hair. His wife too undergoes a massive transformation as a hip social girl of the city life. What follows could probably be a fun-to-watch contest between the two and other contestants. It is also highly probable that the pair wins the contest at the end but even if they lose the wife surely realizes her husband is capable of much more than just the routine life he lives. In all, the story is about a couple realizing their multidimensional personalities and reclaiming their lost love.
Reality shows: making an impact in reel life too
It is no small surprise that reality shows are the order of the day, so much so, that every TV channel these days has a song or dance contest or even a show like Big Boss being lapped up by audiences. Watching celebrities battle it out, reveal their weaknesses and live their lives like ordinary people do, is no small feat and has loads of scope for entertainment, drama, action and even romance. The rather emotionally touching romantic saga of Monica Bedi and Rahul Mahajan was watched with bated breath by all people. Coming back to the topic, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a rip-off the Nach Baliye contest theme. The storyline is very similar to the plot of Vinay Pathak and his wife in the movie Aaja Nachle. There too, the wife realizes her husband’s multidimensional personality when he performs in the dance drama choreographed by Madhuri Dixit. However, even though the storyline is familiar, fans are hoping it is not the only plot in the movie. Of course there will be plenty of consolation in the spectacular sets, songs and costumes as typical of all Yash Raj movies. However, all of the Yash Raj films have been about love stories and the banner has been synonymous with only this theme. Maybe, it is time the production house started experimenting with other genres of movies like maybe – action?!
Saccharine sweet romance and a trendy SRK
For all the hype that Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has to offer, it seems the plot and love story theme has been done to death, especially by the Yash Raj banner. Yes, the heroines look gorgeous, the sets are spectacular, songs are amazing and the heroes always chivalrous and charming but – isn’t our audience smarter than that? Aren’t we a little fed up of the super sweet romance always showcased in our hindi movies? How about a little reality and maybe a touch of darker romance like in ‘Woh Lamhe’ or ‘Pyar Tune Kya Kiya’.
SRK playing it safe – again?
Yes, SRK has no doubt proved that he can act in multidimensional roles. Whether it is as the scientist who feels a rush of desi patriotism when he comes back to Motherland India, or the embittered crippled husband who seeks love in another woman’s arms in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna or the lover boy who believes honesty in love can win any situation in DDLJ SRK sure has come a long way and today stands tall as the undisputed Baadshah of Bollywood. Yet, we fans expect more of him. We would love to see him play a character with shades of grey (think Big B in Aks). We would love to see our SRK try to experiment with other forms of cinema instead of only acting in big budget, mega Bollywood productions. Going by the rushes of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi it seems SRK maybe playing a new character but would be with the same trappings of a regular love story.

Critics is easy on anything………
One thing i want to ask ….. every one… does SRK needs to do different character now. he knows this is the only last few years when he can play romantic roles; not at the age of 50.But he can play character roles then…
What you say .. dont you think Amitabh Bachan did the same angry young man role for a long period of time.
He did Dewaar, janzeer to agnipath, Ganga Jamuna Saraswati…etc a similar genre of films upto a good age which worked at box office. When his suryavansham, Hum and all didn’t worked in box office. He did AKS, Black, Baghban, bade miyan chote miyan and different character roles as per demand.
Yash Chopra is brand for romantic movies. Its like going to a sweet shop and asking for biryani doesn’t makes any sense…
Also there are madhur bhandarkar who always will make realistic movie.
There is david dhavan who will make comedy movies
There is ram gopal verma who will make some political or ghost related films.
I think we should be real and not go to cinema to see real things
its illogical at all. The real thing would be i mean; say in a scene a train going from 1 place to another and reaches in 2 mins( is this real ?) We should not search reality but go with the mind its a drama coz its an entertainment industry not a social welfare or technical study industry
I am sorry if i am wrong; its certainly my view.
and even if one likes (so as they call REAL) type of films… there are different type of films being made now a days .. we can enjoy different taste too.
Hi,
I couldn’t agree more. When we go to see movies, esp. hindi movies, we pretty much need to leave our mind at home!
But guess what, the article is about SRK and how he has tried at doing different roles in his career. If you are a big SRK fan (which I think you are) you might agree with me that he is a pretty good actor. It’s also true that Yash Raj makes awesome love stories, no doubt about that! The way he shows the story is almost dream-like… At the same time, all of his movies are about love and so now it’s become like a love overdose, if you know what I mean…anyways, the article was all in good humour and our apologies if it has hurt anyone’s sentiments!
Thanks, glad you liked the post
