Long after the release of Bhooth, Ram Gopal Varma has come out with another horror flick, this time titled “Phoonk“, scheduled to release on August 22nd. This film stars the Kannada star Sudeep in the lead, along with a Marathi stage actress Amrutha Khanvilkar.
Phoonk unlike Bhooth delves in Black Magic and events which cannot be rationally explained. Sudeep plays a staunch Atheist who ridicules superstition and rituals. As one of the tagline of the movie goes ” It’s superstition till it happens to you” says, some events happen in his life for which no scientific or logical explanation exists. This shakes up his beliefs and he tries to save his family from these horrors. What happens next, Varma says will send a chill down our spines.
Varma is on a publicity overdrive for this movie, after his last movie “Contract” was a dud. He has went onto say ” Don’t say I did not warn you” for people who complain they are having nightmares after seeing Phoonk. (He should have warned us before “Ram Gopal Varma Ki AAG” ). But I must say that he is releasing this movie at the right time as no horror or scary movie has been released in Hindi in a long time.
“Kiccha” Sudeep, as he is known, is a proven talent and also a director himself. Big expectations are building up in Karnataka over his Bollywood entry. The trailers look pretty good (scary) and all in all, this movie seems to have stuck a nice beginning with the audience, lets see on August 22nd what happens.
Phoonk’s Short Review
What a liked about the movie - The Kid’s acting, the camera shots, Sudeep, the splendid sound and the scary mirror scene.
What i did not like about the movie – The crow, the old woman, the screenplay and the climax which proves black magic is real which is total crap.
Should you watch it – Go with a bunch of girls, shout in their ear, scare them. Then its fun, else ditch this and watch RGV’s Kaun or Bhoot on DVD.
Rating - 3/5 if you have a huge group and go there to have fun else 2/5 
Note : RGV has announced a prize money of Rs 5 lakh for anyone who can watch this movie in the theatre all alone. He says no one can. More details Awaited.

Looks like this has got inspired from an Old Kannada movie TuLasidaLa, which revolved around magic magic on a girl. It was scary too.
