Here is an excerpt from the speech made by Mr.Omar Abdullah, the President of the J&K National Conference, which impressed me immensly. After all that horse trading fiasco and other bitter incidents in parliament, the speech made me stop loosing complete hope in democracy. It made me believe that in some nook or corner there exists young India who can think above the dirty politics and make future India a better place to live in. Omar has always been a very good public orator and also a earnest nationalist of a politician. He is also the grandson of Sheikh Abdullah.
“I am a Muslim and I am an Indian,” he began. “And I see no distinction between the two. I don’t know why should I fear the nuclear deal. It is a deal between two countries which, I hope, will become two equals in the future”.He proceeded on to put forth the point that Indian Muslims have absolutely no opposition to the deal and there is no reason why they should. “The enemies of Indian Muslims are not America or deals like these. The enemies are the same as the enemies of all those who are poor — poverty, hunger, lack of development and the absence of a voice.”
He pointed out to the Opposition benches who tried to drown UPA speakers with the chorus of protests against the alleged bribe offer that rocked Parliament hours earlier that in his 10 years as an MP he had never disrupted anyone speaking. And that he expected the the MP’s to extend him the same courtesy so that smaller parties like his could also explain their stand to the public.
He criticized the Left for their hypocritical stand on who’s secular and who’s not and that they are hand in glove with the rightist elements, Abdullah said, “Today, the Left is telling me that all secular parties should stand with the BJP to bring down this government. The same Left treated me like a political untouchable when I was with the NDA.”
“I am not a member of the UPA and don’t aspire to be one. I made a mistake to be with the NDA, especially after Gujarat riots happened. My conscience had asked me to quit NDA but I didn’t. My conscience has still not forgiven me,” he said.
He also spoke about the Amarnath Issue, Abdullah said he had fought for the cause since it involved the land of his people. He dared LK Advani and the BJP to name a single leader from Jammu and Kashmir who had opposed the Amarnath yatra and had harmed the Yatri’s. “Until the day there is even a single Muslim in Kashmir, from Srinagar to Amarnath, the Amarnath yatra will not be allowed to stop,” he said.

How I would congratulate you I do not know. I am 46 years old and never putted my vote for any political party at any kind of election till date. Day before recent historic parliament session, all political party and its leader was to me just an opportunists & self-conscious. Two days I observed every moment of parliament session. There were number of baseless speeches without a real topic, unwanted drama within parliament, puts my head down as of Indian Citizen. But I found bright future of our and for my next generation through your speech, by Mr. Gandhi’s explanation, quite behavior from few young leaders of all political party and of course a honest speaker shows me/us that I/we no need to be worry with my/our future. Members like you all are also within our parliament. Leaders like you all putted an example to them who just thoughts that the parliament is for fun/power/profits and position.

It was very good speech, unfortunately great politician of our country do not want goods at any form.
We need more MPs’ like Omar Abdullah who are passionate, articulate and have a futuristic vision unlike the Leftists. Yes, this was a great speech and indeed it was from-the-heart. There is no doubt about his sincerity, but he got it wrong when he said “we will fight for our land till our last breath”.
What does he mean by our land? This land belongs to India and Indian people. This is the land for which Indian soldiers have sacrificed there life.
I agree that yatra has been going on for many years, but can he deny that in the recent past there have been different incidents of attacks on amarnath pilgrims.
He went on to say that “Until the day there is even a single Muslim in Kashmir, yatra will not be allowed to stop”. Does he forget that it’s the same Kashmir valley, where hundreds of temples have been destroyed and pandits have been thrown out of there homes.
He talks big about Muslims in Kashmir and kashmiriyaat, but when it came to question of small piece of land for shrine board.. Kashmiri Muslims showed their real face.
Mr. Omar Abdullah talks as if kashmiri Muslims are doing big favors on Indian Hindus.
I’m sorry it’s we Indians, Indian soldiers, its crores and crores of tax payers money channeled in to Kashmir for it’s welfare, it’s India as a whole which has done favors on Kashmir Muslims.
That was lightning amidst darkness. There YET seems to be hope for this country. Let us hope and pray that THE ALMIGHTY decides ‘enough is enough’, that there will be hundreds and thousands of Omar Abdullahs hence forth to save this country.

Now i would like to address someone in this forum who said that there was no comment on Mr Omar Abdullah’s comment on “humari zameen ka mamla tha…..”
On this note i guess the person who commented forgot that Omar was talking about the land of the public which was being given off to the “Amarnath shrine board” which is not a goverment owend board rather a board formed for the people who run the Amarnath yatra. And the general sentiments were against writing this piece of land off to the board and the demand was to let it be for general public use and not for any particular sect. “Humari”- meant all the people in general and not any particular sect like the hindu’s coming to Amarnath or the muslims going for prayers through that way.
We must respect the sentiments and rights of every Indian and not just think based on religion.
May Allah pak show the true Indian’s the right way.

I’m a Christian and for years I have been praying that God would raise up righteous leaders who seek not their own but the good of this nation. Men like you are blessings from God. My Bible says, “Exaltation comes neither from the east nor from the west nor from the south. It is God who puts down one and raises another.”(Psalm 75:6,7). May God raise a conscientious leader to the Prime Ministership.
Of the 39 comments in this blog I’ve read, I’ve seen three of them say that they would think twice before voting for the BJP in the future. I wonder how many more have had their minds changed by that day’s proceedings. Only the elections next year will reveal the truth.

I dont see this speech as very great. All he has done is stir peoples emotions. This is what all politicians have done and the Indian masses get impressed with this. He has also discussed about everything else other than the Nuclear deal. The parliament is not a place where politicians can give great speeches, be famous get publicity, it should be a place where there is a proper discussion and decisions made. In his speech he has just mentioned that America is not our enemy, who cares if they are our enemies or not. We should just think about business and if it is beneficial for India then Parties/MPs should support it else not. I believe Omar is no different from the other MPs. Instead of a emotional speeches politicians should consider all the factors about the nuclear deal and also let the people know why the decision was made, instead of just saying things like America is not our enemy and we will be equals in the future.

The governor of kashmir in 1990 chased kasmiri pandits (u should read between the lines it is not a discussion B/w u and me) out from kashmir and not kashmiris you should ask those people who left kashmir why they followed the instructions of governor. I have been to the Kashmir valley last May. I loved the place and the people. All were warm and courteous, and frankly speaking it was normal as any other vacation spot in India. People there just want to live their life peacfully, come out of the poverty circle and aspire for good jobs , good education.. like the rest of us.
Lets not use this Hindu-Muslim thing, terrorism to divide our country. It has done enough harm already ….Clashes won’t solve issues, peaceful dialogues will. I hope the Amarnath issue gets solved in amicable manner.

Amarnath land issue was misinterpretted by Jammu people and thanks to BJP for playing with the sentiments of the people of Jammu. I was in Kashmir and Jammu both during the riots and saw it with my eyes how selfish political leaders both in the valley and in Jammu raised this issue out of proportion and misguided the people (both hindus and muslims of J&K). Giving the land to Amarnath Shrine Board or any other out-of-state body was a violation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. The general sentiment of the public was that ‘ y give it to someone from outside the state when there r a lot of hindus in the state to take care of the land, y not give it to them?’ and this sentiment was wrongly projected as a anti hindu slogan in the valley by selfish political parties like PDP and BJP, which then then got a chance to improve their vote bank by playing their well-known game of divide and rule.
There is a difference between what was projected out in media and what the real truth was and it felt really bad when people on both sides of Jawahar tunnel were made prey to ill-faced politics.
