It was so long, so so long since I heard Hetfield going “YEAH!!”. I still remember how that announced the arrival of something that promised to blow your mind. When I first heard that ‘Tallica is releasing their new Album, I suddenly felt a breath of fresh air. I couldn’t help but get really excited and really restless to listen to what they have to offer this time. Knowing Metallica, I was sure they would bang the charts with something new or at worst not repeat the disaster of St. Anger. When I first heard the album, I had the most refreshing three hours in real long! The band with their new bassist Robert Trujillo has a more upbeat bass inputs than any of previous Metallica’s..there’s more to listen to base than Newsted’s. Ulrich too has seem to change his style a little bit to complement that of Trujillo’s. He has got even faster keeping rhythm and tempo intact- just like the old times. Its great to hear Hetfield’s voice command the same authority like it did. Although Kirk has never been my favourite, he has created some good solo’s in this one. For the first time in his career does he resemble Joe Satriani ( Gosh, finally!! ). Hetfield’s riffs are certainly one of the best evvvvva!!

With the release of “Death Magnetic”, Metallica became the only band to debut at No.1 Albums five times. The Album went straight to numero uno in UK, US and Canada. The heavy touring and marketing since the last year about the album had successfully created waves of enthusiasm amongst its fans. Its interesting to note what led Hetfield to make this album. In his own words, “……….and then it kind of grew from there, thinking about death… some people are drawn towards it, and just like a magnet, and other people are afraid of it and push away”.
The first striking inclusion in the repertoire is Unforgiven III! Very different style from the previous two. The only remnants being that the intro reminds of the old western influence. Where Unforgiven had plucking, Unforgiven II had riffs, this one has keyboards, and that too pretty haunting ones. My favorites in the album have been “All Nightmare Long” and “The Unforgiven III”.
All n all, the album makes you taste Metallica’s blood once again, little warmer and matured. Tougher and faster riffs, vengeful solos ( yes, Kirk has still not got rid of his Waah! ), faster drumming rhythms and double basses and more domination of bass. I have also heard that this is the only album of Metallica where all the 4 have contributed for every song! Some more interesting facts -
- New Producer, Bob out – Rick in. Rick known to get the old bands’ act together has also produced Slayer
- First recording stint of the bassist ( St. Anger was live studio )
- Guitar Hero III is claimed to be the best version of the album
- They have their first musical in 20 years ( after….and justice for all)

Suicide & Redemption- this is my favourite in the album… The way the music seems flows… every note complementing the previous… blew me away!
A good return after the beating they got for St Anger. I like ‘That was just your life’, ‘All Nightmare Long’ and ‘Day That Never Comes’ so far.
But why did they screw up the mastering of the album so badly? It’s ear-shattering loud! The producer Rick seems to be behind it. He’s known to have done it in past too. Have to download the Guitar Hero tracks to see how much better they are.
Minor issues aside, I’m lovin’ it!
The Rolling Stone review says it best:
“Death Magnetic is the musical equivalent of Russia’s invasion of Georgia – a
sudden act of aggression from a sleeping giant”
“Anyone who says this isn’t a metal album is mistaken. It is Metallica who
determines what is metal”
I like that – “It is Metallica who determine what is metal!!!”…completely agree…
Wow! Thank you! I always wanted to write in my site something like that. Can I take part of your post to my blog?
