It was a big dissapointment for the Chinese shooter Du Li who was tipped to win the gold.

  • Shooting – Men’s 10m Air Pistol – Samaresh Jung

Samaresh Jung has failed to qualify for the finals of the Men’s 10m Air Pistol. He finished 42nd in the qualification road. Jung had won 5 golds at the last Commonwealth games and his next event is the Men’s 50 metre pistol on August 12th.

  • Shooting – Men’s Trap – Mansher Singh and Manavjit Singh Sandhu

Guys, atlast may be some Good News. In Men’s Trap Qualification – Day 1, Manavjit Singh Sandhu is in a respectable 12th Position. He shot a score of 70(23-23-24) with the leaders being at 73(24-24-25). The other Trap Shooter from India Mansher Singh shot amazingly in the first two rounds but failed to hold his nerve in the third. He is in 21st position with a score of 69(25-24-20). He would have been in the Top 3 atleast if his last round had went well. Nevertheless, there is still tomorrow’s Qualification round left and both have a chance. The Top 6 go through after 5 rounds of qualifying(3 rounds were held today and two tomorrow). Wishing them the best.

  • Judo – Women’s 48 kg - Khumujam Tombi Devi

Khumujam Tombi Devi lost to Hormigo Ana of Portugal in the Preliminary match of Women’s 48 kg category in Judo. Divya Tomar from India is still left in the 78 Kg category.

  • Archery – Women’s Individual – Ranking Round – Dola Banerjee, Bombayala Devi and Pranitha Vardineni

This report is just for the Individual Ranking Round. No elimination has been done it. Elimination rounds will start on August 12th.

The 3 archers Dola Banerjee, Bombayala Devi and Pranitha Vardineni have not performed upto expectations. Remains to be seen if they can lift their game in the Elimination/KnockOut Rounds . Also in the team event for Archery these 3 archers have got a bye, finishing 6th, and will face China in the Quarters for a place in the Semi’s. A bright chance here for atleast a bronze in the Team event.

  • Archery – Men’s Individual – Ranking Round – CHAMPIA Mangal Singh

Guys, Awesome news, CHAMPIA Mangal Singh has Ranked 2nd in the Ranking round . The World Record Holder IM Dong-Hyun(KOR) was behind him . He will now play the 63rd Ranked “HOJJATOLAH Vaezi” of Iran in the next round.

In Archery, 64 Individuals will compete in the Ranking round to be ranked 1 to 64. Then eliminations will be held between ranking’s like 1 vs 64, 2 vs 63 and so on . Hence Champia will have it easy until the Semi’s if he keeps his form going. Great work by him. All of India must cheer for the lad from Jamshedpur.

  • Badminton – Women’s Singles – Saina Nehwal

Saina Nehwal has beaten Ella Karachkova of Russia convincingly to win the First Round of the women Singles Badminton at the 2008 beijing Olympics. She won 21-9 , 21-8 easily in 2 games. She will pay Larysa Gryga of Ukraine in the next round of 32.

  • Boxing – Men’s Middle (75kg) Round of 32 – Vijender Kumar

Vijender Kumar defeated Jack Badou of Gambia 13 – 2. He was devastating and seems to be in great form. Thats very good news for India. He is now in the round of 16. He will face CHOMPHUPHUANG Angkhan of thailand there.

  • Boxing – Men’s Light Heavy (81kg) Round of 32 – Dinesh Kumar

Dinesh Kumar lost to AbdelHafid of Algeria in the Light Heavy category.

  • Rowing – Men’s Single Sculls – Bajranglal Takhar

Bajranglal Takhar qualified for the quarterfinals of the Men’s Single Sculls rowing event by coming 3rd in his heat. The quarters will be held on Aug 11th.

  • Swimming – Men’s 100 mtr Breast Stroke – Sandeep Sejwal

Sandeep Sejwal has come second in the Men’s 100 mtr Breast Stroke of his heat. But his time of 1.02.19 was not enough for a place in the semi-finals.

good work to keep track of things.. keep it up.. I am extremely worried about the facts & figures of the medals tally & India’s position..as a developing country (& ppl in poverty)we have so many problems to deal with before we could show something to world…the irony is that the exploitation by politicians…and the hypocritic media..pls think for a moment abt TV channels (such as IBM, NDTV etc).. there are debates on hosting olympics…MOST SHAMEFUL THING for us..not only in this matter, but anything and everything, Indian Media makes a big fuss for the heck of ratings & bring forth nothing..responsible media is very important for growth of the country… which is a BIG negetive in India…sometimes we hear the names of Child wonders, like Budhia singh (marathon runner), Kutraleeswaran (marathon swimmer, he swam 30-60KMs in sea).. but no one knows their plight…look at the fate of hockey team, which produced world record in winning most number of Olympic Gold..well we can keep on going on this topic… LETS PRAY & HOPE to get medals, As Indian citizians lets try to improve our country in every deed of ours, lets live with Self-esteem & respect & hope that we get atleast 10 medals in each category G,S,B during 2020…FAME does’nt come by SHOWING but by DOING, JAI HIND

Great to see Champia in good form. I hope he becomes at least another Rathore and brings a silver. He just need to hold his position here. Though, the way he almost got the WR few months back, Gold is a possibility.
I would say that Champia, Tennis doubles, and Rathore, and probably any boxer are probably the best hopes this time.

  12. Mridula Says: August 9th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

But for your webpage I would not have known about Champia. I mean they have stories about Dola Banerjee coming 31 in women archery but not a word about Champia though Guardian has his name in one of their stories!

    I linked your post here-

thanks for the coverage…and while the initial reports dont seem that favourable, India still has a chance
its kind of sad though, that we manage to win so rarely, that any medal wull do. other counties want gold medals we will settle for at least a bronze.maybe this time we’ll take home a few golds and shock the world :)

    hello all indians
we should ban cricket in india then may be they give more attention to other games,MR george of UK dont consider cricket as a game ,he said this is agame of 11 fools and 11000 spectators, thats y cricket is not into the olympics.
govt should promote athlethes and other sportspersons.
i am an indian plus australian,i am happy that australia is doing good in 08 beijing but i will be delighted when i see any indian standing on the 1 board gold medal in his/her neck and all people standing on india’s national anthem.

    Respected Pradhan Mantriji,
    Respected Khel Mantriji.

What in your opnion is the chances of winning a medal in the Beijing Olympics?

India after 61 years of independence is struggling for one medal and China is fighting for the first contender. Do you find any difference? Or is it a sheer badluck that we are born in India?

What help have you provided to the sportsmen?
How many children you have selected for training to go for the next olympics?
Are the managers and trainers true to their profession? Are the trainees getting what they deserve?

Unless India bring medals many more questions are to be replied by you?

Please do not indulge politics with the pious sports. Let the experts handle it

Should we Indians be happy that this is by far our best performance at the Olympics- 3 medals out of a population os 1 billion? OR

    Should we be worried?

Just something for you all to think about…

  75. amit rathi Says: August 20th, 2008 at 9:44 pm

    dear all,

i strongly endorse Mayukh’s view i think all the boxers, saina (badminton) and all the wrestlers deserves a warm welcome along with Abhinav, however i tend to disagree somewhat with wot he said in the latest post…letz look at the positives i really think dat by 2016 we will be in top 5 of medals tally,i have a strong hunch that this olympics will be the turning point, and the psyche of the people and how sports (except cricket) is treated will defnately change.Kudos to all those glorious people in beijing, especially akhil, saina, yogeshvar and jeetendra (Pls lets not forget them) U Ppl hav really made us PROUD.

Hey GuideMe, what’s the “here we come China” and “tri-colour rising above the Chinese flag” all about? Sounds like you don’t quite like China~~

anyways, you probably know better that 3 gold is not a concern for China in the gold race, as in 1984 when PRC first competed in the Olympics we received 15 gold~ Way to go India! and congrats on the air rifle gold! (that was some fantastic shooting btw)

China & India should be allies, representing the rise of Ancient Asian cultures to new globle superpowers!

Great times checking out your website daily to stay up to date on India’s (below average again) performance…at least it is a step in the right direction – but watching the athletes from other winning nations, we have a long. long way to go…Cheers…till London!!
