India wins the first test against England by 6 wickets in Chennai. India lead the test series 1-0. Coming out of the trauma from the Mumbai attacks, it was not easy for the players to give the game the best they could. But they once again proved to the Englishmen that they are in any way not an easy nut to crack. Sachin and Yuvraj steered the Indians to the victory. Sachin and Yuvraj remained unbeaten on 103 and 85 respectively.
Set a debatable target of 387, Indians never looked like they were settling for anything less than a Victory. With Sehwag giving the ideal start there was no stopping at all. All it required on the last day for the players was to hang around for 90 overs and 256 runs would come along at quite an easy pace. That is what exactly Gambhir(66), Sachin(103*) , Yuvraj(85*) did. England needed 9 wickets for a win but their bowling could not come good on the last day. They however tried to put brakes on the free sail by picking up wickets of Gambhir and when the Wall crumbled again for a mere 4 runs. VVS Laxman departed after a decent 26. But The little master hung in there with the inform Yuvraj Singh and ensured the win unlike the last time where the Indians fluttered at the victory gates against Pakistan in Chennai. Yuvraj was impressive too with his flamboyant innings and he proved a point here too as a good replacement for Dada.
The players now travel to Mohali to play the second test starting from 19-Dec.
