It is usually the case that a site with a .com TLD, whether hosted in US or outside US (UK, Australia etc), generally shows up only in Google.com SERP’s and not in Google.co.uk / Google.com.au etc
You may be Rank 1 for certain keywords in Google.com. However, in a Google Country Specific domain, you may not be found at all. Creating a website that ranks well for all localities is a major task but probably a better long-term strategy.
Important Tips for Ranking in Country Specific Search Engines may include one or more of the following;
- Get the Corresponding Country Code TLD Name like ‘.in ‘, ‘.uk’ etc.
- Getting large number of relevant back links from domains hosted in the target country in which you want to rank for like UK, Canada, Australia etc.
- Server Location that hosts your site.
- Usage of Email and Social Media Marketing can fetch you large volumes of local traffic from targeted countries.
- Use of Geo-targeting option in Google Webmasters Central
- Being listed in the appropriate regional category at Open Directory DMOZ might help.
- Having an appropriate physical address mentioned somewhere on your site, specially in the Contact page would help.
- Create a separate site to target different areas.
