All You Need To Know About Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the world today. The condition occurs when the body fails to produce insulin or not enough insulin for the body to process the foods and sugars that we eat, into energy. The cells of the body need the hormone insulin to give them the energy that they need to survive. Diabetes can also occur when the body’s cells do not use the insulin that is produced properly. Whichever type of diabetes you are diagnosed with, there are a number of conditions that could occur when you are diabetic. Diabetes cannot be cured currently and the patient who has this condition must constantly monitor their blood to make sure that they are properly regulating the sugar in their bloodstream.

A diabetic can control their illness with medication, insulin or lifestyle changes. Many times those patients that are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes can control the condition with diet and exercise. Living a healthy lifestyle will go a long way toward preventing the illness from happening in the first place. While doctors do not know what causes the illness to occur, there have been links to genetics as well as obesity and lifestyle.

The presence of diabetes and the type that you have can be determined by a blood test called a glucose tolerance test. The patient is given a beverage that is rich in glucose and the blood is tested at specific intervals to find out how the body is processing the glucose. Once the glucose is measured, the type of diabetes can be determined and diagnosed.

A patient that is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes will not produce the insulin that the body needs. This type of diabetes accounts for five to ten percent of all patients that are diagnosed with the illness. The patient with this type of diabetes will have to keep a close eye on their blood sugar levels and monitor their kidney function. There are a number of complications that accompany this type of diabetes including heart disease, kidney damage and nerve damage.

It is very important that the patient with Type 1 diabetes take good care of their general health as well as monitor their condition. Oral health, skin care, eye care, foot care and a number of other health concerns should be a top priority with someone with this type of diabetes. Being armed with information on the condition as well as nutrition information is one of the best things that a patient with Type 1 diabetes can do for their health.

A patient who is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes is said to be insulin resistant. These patients produce insulin, but the amounts that are produced are insufficient. The body does not use the insulin that it does produce in an effective manner as well. Most of the patients who are diagnosed with diabetes have Type 2.

When you are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes you will learn a great deal about the nutritional aspects of controlling the illness in the beginning. In some patients, it is possible to control the disease with the use of diet and exercise. For others, it is necessary to use oral medication to control the blood glucose levels. When the disease has progressed to an advanced level, the patient will have to control their illness with the use of insulin. It is very important that the patient control the disease as long as they can with lifestyle changes and diet.

The same concerns that exist for diabetes type 1 exist for diabetes type 2 too. The patient with this type of diabetes will have to be concerned with their oral health, skin care, foot care and eye health. Living a healthy lifestyle is very important for those who are diagnosed with this disease. A diabetic can live a long and healthy life with the condition if they take care of their overall health and monitor their blood glucose levels.

About four percent of all pregnant women will have a condition known as gestational diabetes. This form of diabetes can occur in patients with no history of the disease, but have high enough blood glucose levels while they are pregnant to be considered diabetic. In about five to ten percent of these women, the diabetes will remain after the pregnancy is over.

Not much is known about why this condition occurs in pregnant women, but doctors are closing in on a possible reason. During pregnancy the hormones that support the placenta may be blocking the insulin from performing its function. It is very important that the pregnant woman who is diagnosed with this form of diabetes be treated immediately. Gestational diabetes can affect the health of the baby and the mother. The baby will be receiving high glucose levels from the placenta which causes the baby to produce too much insulin. When this occurs the extra glucose will be stored in the baby’s body as fat. The baby’s who are born with this condition will be larger than average and will face health problems during their life. The babies born with this condition are at a greater risk of being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes as adults and will also face a greater risk of being obese as children and adults.

A woman who is diagnosed with this condition will be treated with special meal plans as well as exercise that are scheduled during the pregnancy. It will also mean that the blood glucose will have to be monitored during the pregnancy as well. Some pregnant women will have to receive insulin injections during their pregnancy to manage the condition.

Diabetes is not the end of the world. Millions of people are living completely healthy lives with the condition every day. It will mean that these patients will have to constantly monitor their health and their condition. Watching diet and living a healthy lifestyle can help the diabetic patient avoid many of the problems that can come with the condition.

If you are diagnosed with diabetes, one of the best things that you can do for yourself is to get as much information as you can about your condition. You will have to be on top of your health at all times and keep in constant communication with your doctor.
