Hanging out at a friends place. Its 2 Am on a chilly night. Sleeplessness. Random thoughts and from them surge numerous random discussions. The sky is beautiful. Millions of stars shine to play their tiny part to light up the sky. The sounds of metallica, pink floyd and the likes keeps your hopes high to welcome a beautiful day tomorrow.
you still feel that something is missing. Incomplete. Is it more alcohol. I guess not. Maybe its just the need to go out into the night. Go out into the empty roads. Cross the orange blinking signals at speeds you wouldn’t imagine to in the day.
You curse the Govt. The police commissioner. you wish places would still be open to take your order. you wish they hadn’t called it a night at as early as 11. But then, what the Hell. All you need is a tea and a smoke. If the curfew is what it takes to keep the city safe so be it.
You think of the places that would still serve you tea. you could maybe try the railway station. No. Too crowded. How about the airport? Damn, they just moved it too far. Loitering around on the quiet of the streets you see a bunch of taxi drivers parked on the road side. you slow down. And you see the cycle. Its there, parked against the light pole. A few bags hanging from either sides of it. you pull over. A man smiles and waves at you. Seems to be the owner of the cycle.
You lock your car curiously making sure there an no cops around. Don’t want to get extorted in the middle of the night. No sense in a confrontation with the stink of alcohol in your breath. Everything seems ok. Maybe the cops too have called it a day. As you approach him you are welcome with a choice of tea or coffee. Damn. Just what you wanted. You see a few empty cigg packs lying around. Tea without a cigg is like a nut without a bolt. Right. You laugh at your own analogy-Joke. You cheers on the tea with your friends. Just to keep the flow of the night on.
The first sip of tea and you know it was worth all the trouble. As you spend an hour at the cycle shop you see quite a few of the insomniacs stop by. A couple of cops too. They don’t trouble you. Money is exchanged. Fifty if there are just a few for chai. Maybe hundred on Fridays and Saturdays. Gandhiji ain’t smiling. Who cares though. You definitely drive back satisfied.
With a small thank you ringing in your head for the cycle chai wala.
I would definitely give the credit to Munniswamy (MG Road) to come up with the masterplan of cycle chai wala.
