Vijender Kumar defeated Ecuador’s Carlos Gongora 9-4 assuring India yet another medal when he entered the semi-finals of the middleweight (75kg) category on Wednesday. This also marks India’s best performance in an Olympic event with 3 medals & the first one in boxing. He was not too aggressive but held his nerves and outplayed Gongora with his sharp reflexes and sound defense which helped him dominate all four rounds with the scores 2-0,2-1,3-2 & 2-1.
He will now face Emilio Correa of Cuba in the Semi Finals on Aug 22nd at 12.45 PM IST. Write down the time somewhere, put an alarm, make a banner, however but please watch the fight.
Earlier, Jitender Kumar lost his 51kg quarter-final bout and missed out an Olympic medal. Jitender lost to European champion Georgy Balakshin of Russia in the last eight stage 15-11.
In his home town of Bhiwani (Haryana), the sadness the Local people felt after Jitender lost was washed away in the euphoria of Vijender’s win.
ALL THE VERY BEST to Vijender in the Semi Finals & I really wish India’s medal count in boxing starts off with a Gold added to it.

I live in the UK and followed the whole match on bbc. This guy is really great. He just needs to keep his head in the right place!!
All boxers,Bindra and the badminton girl deserve a grand welcome. They should be everywhere instead of just our cricketers. They are the real heroes!! An inspiration to a great nation!!!
Long live India!!!
Hi All,
I have a question for EVERYONE…
Should we Indians be happy that this is by far our best performance at the Olympics- 3 medals out of a population os 1 billion? OR
Should we be worried?
Just something for you all to think about…
India’s performace this year has been the best since the time i was born
… We have won three medals and some like Saina Nehwal, and all the boxers have done really well.
If only we can continue down this road…. Way to go India!
Rome was’nt built in a day !
China did’nt do so well in the 80’s and look at them know !
Our economy was’nt so Bouyant in the 80’s and look at it Know !
Ther were not many Indians abroad in the 80’s and look at them Know !
So the Fact of the matter is, what ever India Achives Its an achievement and build on it .
