Shane Mosley defeated Antonio Margarito

Post Match Update: Shane Mosley took away Antonio Margarito’s WBA welterweight title by scoring a technical knockout 43 seconds into the 9th round on Saturday night before the largest crowd ever to witness any event at the Staples Center.
Antonio Margarito vs. Sugar Shane Mosley Live World Welterweight Championship fight – Boxing fans around the world are getting ready for January 24, 2009 (10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT). That’s the day that “Sugar” Shane Mosley will enter the ring with Antonio Margarito, the current holder of the WBA welterweight world title. The two will box at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, and the match will begin at 6 p.m. pacific time. The bout will be the first fight for both boxers in 2009. Margarito recently defeated Miguel Cotto in July of 2008, while Mosley’s last major match was against Ricardo Mayorga in September.
Mosley is going to have his work cut out for him, that’s for sure. In the past, the thirty-seven year old appears to have always known exactly how to avoid his opponents’ attacks and fight back. This has earned him 38 KO’s and a record of 45-5. His professional boxing career began with a thirty-eight fight winning streak, in fact, with thirty-six of those being won by knockout. Mosley grabbed both the WBC welterweight title and the IBF lightweight title during this streak. However, recent matches have shown Mosley to be far from undefeatable. He has won seven out of twelve recent matches, losing twice to Winky Wright and Vernon Forrest and once to Miguel Cotto.
Despite these losses, Mosley has taken down opponents bigger than Margarito before. In fact, in matches against taller and larger fighters, Mosley has come out even with four wins and four defeats. These wins are impressive, however. In 2000, Mosley’s third fight saw him defeat Oscar De La Hoya and in 2003, Mosley defeated De La Hoya a second time.
The six foot tall Vernon Forrest, on the other hand, bested Mosley in 2002 twice. The first saw Forrest King Mosley in only the second round and this was Mosley’s very first loss in his professional career. While he sought revenge within six months, Forrest took him down a second time. Mosley’s third and fourth losses came to Ronald Wright, another larger opponent.
However, when it comes to Margarito, Mosley is going to have to up his game. While Margarito may not have the greatest skills or be the fastest fighter around, his strategy lies in his non-stop attacks. He comes at his opponents from all sides and never lets up. While his career didn’t start out with a long winning streak (he lost three out of twelve fights right off), he does have an overall record of 25-2 with 19 KOs. One of those KOs was against Miguel Cotto – Margarito handed Cotto his very first loss.
Most of Margarito’s defeats have been at the hands of larger opponents like Paul Williams and Daniel Santos. Both were fairly close matches, however, especially the one with Santos. Margarito lost their 2004 meeting by a split technical decision.
Shane Mosley vs Antonio Margarito Odds
Does Mosley have any chance against Margarito? While nothing is sure until the night of the fight, but many boxing experts say no, Mosley simply does not have the speed or the power to defeat the larger man. Mosley’s past fights show that he generally plants himself in one spot and throws his punches rather than duck, weave, and move. But with Margarito, that’s going to mean Mosley is going to take many of his hard punches, and Margarito tends to only get stronger as a fight goes on.
While Mosley has yet to be stopped at lightweight, welterweight, or light middleweight, he’s never come up against anyone who is simply relentless. Margarito, though, has shown that once he gets in the ring, there are very few who can stop him. Once he gets going, he quickly gains steam and puts the pressure on. It’s this unrelenting pressure that gave him victories over Cotto and Kermit Cintron, both of whom rained down many heavy blows on Margarito. Margarito shrugged off these assaults and kept on going, sending both of these larger men to the mats.

Which man will walk away with the WBA welterweight championship? Will Mosley stand up to Margarito’s non-stop onslaught, or will he fall victim to his nonstop pummeling? While many predict that Mosley will fall, nothing is decided until the final bell has rung.

Mosely is going to get worn down and then destroyed just like Cotto was…only quicker! He is not even 1/2 the fighter he once was and he’s no match for Margarito. He can’t hurt him, he isn’t the speed merchant he once was and I just can’t see him even making a fight out of this. Margarito will keep after him, wear him down, and most likely end his career!
After Margarito beats Mosely, I’d actually like to see Margarito/Cintron 3. I know a lot of fans don’t have interest in that…but since it was Cintron who gave Margarito the shot to get back in the mix ($ and otherwise)…I hope Margarito will give Cintron the same opportunity! I’ve heard that Ronnie Shields says he knows he can train Cintron to beat Margarito!
