Abhinav Bindra Wins Gold at Beijing 2008 Olympics
Posted by admin on August 11th, 2008

Watch over 100,000 movies and TV shows on your PC

Abhinav Bindra Wins Gold at Beijing 2008 Olympics, 10 metre Air Rifle Mens Event. Bindra is India’s First Ever Individual to win Gold in Olympics History.

This is India’s First Olympic gold in 28 years. The last time India won gold was at the 1980 Moscow Olympics for Hockey!

The calm and composed 2006 world champion shooter entered the final in fourth place (100,99,100,98,100 and 99) but held his nerves until the end.

Viewing the match was very tense as all of us watching knew we were on a cusp of history. Hakkinen and Bindra were tied going into the Final Round. And even the Atheist in me was praying he shoots better than the Finn. And did he deliver or what! He shot a near bulls eye and then Hakkinen buckled under pressure of Bindra’s brilliance and the prayers of a million Indian glued to the TV screen. My mom had tears of joy and I leaped in ecstasy. India was on the Gold Medal Tally Score Board .

Watch this video of the Indian National Anthem and Tri-Color rising above the Chinese Flag in Beijing. Abhinav you rock. Watching it makes me feel so emotional. This is what Sport is all about.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVOHAqKtA6s

He finished ahead China’s Zhu Qinan and Finland’s Henri Hakkinen by scoring 104.5 points in the final round and clinching India’s First Individual Gold.

Bindra finished with 700.5 points overall. Zhu, the 2004 Gold Medalist from Athens Olympics, had 699.7 points. Hakkinen got the bronze with 699.4 points.

I personally feel this gold ranks higher than even our 1983 Cricket World Cup victory.

Our heartiest congratulations to Abhinav Bindra for Making India Proud!!!

I hope all the other Indian Olympians take the initiative now and deliver more. Then 2008 Beijing and Bindra’s gold will be viewed as the Turning Point in our Sports History.

With this Gold Medal, India is ranked 11th in the Medals Tally. Probably its highest ever :)

Bindra made some really nice comments after his win. He said that his Gold is for the entire nation and the problem with Indian Olympic sport has always been Negativism and he hopes it will change from now on.

Rewards pour in for Abhinav Bindra

In an attempt to encourage sports in India, many States and Organisation has decided to rewards (cash or others) for Abhinav Bindra. The Punjab government has announced a cash reward of 1 crore for Abhinav. The Haryana Governement too has honoured this shooter with a cash reward of 25 lakhs. The BCCI, keeping to it promise to help nurture other sports in India too has announced a 25lakhs reward.

Even smaller states have followed suite. The Chattisgarh govt. has decided to reward Abhinav with 1 lakhs. Meanwhile, the Bihar Govt. has taken the unique and noble decision to name the Patna Indoor Stadium after this top notch shooter. This is in addition to a cash reward of 11 lakhs.

This sort of rewards and incentives will go a long way to inspire Indians to take to the gun, bow and arrow and other sports . Money is always a huge incentive and Olympics Gold reserves both huge Fame and money. If they can gift Yuvraj Singh could get a Porsche and the Entire Indian T-20 cricket team got more than 1.5 crores each, then Abhinav deserves a Bentley atleast.

Abhinav Bindra’s Blog Entries

This is what Abhinav Bindra has written in his blog before he leaves for India. Read it.

“So it is now over and the time for me to return home has arrived. I know my life is not goign to be even close to the same upon return but it is something i am going to have to embrace and actually enjoy which i am at this moment finding way more daunting than shooting…
The truth is i am scared because it is not somethign i am familiar it but i would like to take this opportunity to thank all my fans and all my well wishers who have rooted for me and all those who have left such kind comments on the blog page as well.
i have finished reading all the comments but i am hoping to catch up once i am home and the media hype dies down.
I also want to wish the other participating the best of luck…although i am not going to be around seeing them at the village i will be definitely rooting for them from back home. I am hoping we cna come back with some more medals because we have all worked so hard and really deserve some more. “

After winning, read below.

“More than the joy, elation, euphoria my strongest feeling is a release from a thousand kilo weight that has been daunting me for the last 12 years.
I am really really happy that i could deliver for my country and all the indian athletes who are trying and working just as hard as me.
I have a strong feeling that we are going to win more medals at these games and it is going to be great to be able to watch my compatriots without any thoughts like my training and event off my mind.
I really hope this is the beginning of a journey of many more medals for India and glory for our great country and its people.”

For more read Bindra’s Blog.

Bindra seems a very composed and self effacing guy. Great going Abhinav. Don’t change because of fame.

Instead of showering Gifts and money to Abhinav Bindra, our politicians and corporates should think of creating facilities for the “have not” sportpersons. Bindra doesn’y need anybody’s money/charity.
If they are really serious for Country’s proud, they must contribute this way. No more self advertisements in the context of these announcements.

    @rakesh

waht u say is true in one way…but also remember how they treat our cricketers when they win minor tourneys..we need to encourage ppl to take up other sports and also show they can make money from it..money is a big motivation apart from fame and patriotism
