The 57th NHL AllStar Game takes place during the midpoint in the regular hockey season every year. It is a chance for the players to give fans an exhibition game that pits the best players in the league against each other. It is an exciting chance for fans of the sport to see the stars of the game playing in an event with the best of the best. Hockey is a rough sport and it takes a certain kind of talent to make it to the All Stars.
All the proceeds from the game benefit the player’s pension fund and it has become a tradition every year since its inception in 1948. This was the year of the first official National Hockey League All-Star game and it has been played in subsequent years in the same format ever since. There have been a few years since 1948 when the game was not played and these were due to various lockouts as well as the agreement not to play the game during (winter) Olympic years, but traditionally the event is a yearly affair.
The starting lineup players are chosen by the fans for this game, and it gives every fan a chance to vote on who they believe the stars of the game are for that particular year. In the beginning, the game was to be played by the defending Stanley Cup champions against a dream team made up of players from the remaining five teams. It wasn’t until the 21st year of the game that the classic East vs. West format began. In the 1990’s there was another attempt at a change of format, with the all stars from North America taking on a team of stars who were from another area of the world. It became the first International game, but there were critics of the new format and in 2003 the game reverted back the East vs. West format that had reigned for so many years.
The 57th All Star NHL 2009 game is set to take place on January 25th in Montreal, Canada at the Bell Centre Arena. Voting for the starting lineup players is closed and the teams have been chosen. It is the event of the year for hockey fans and if you are looking for tickets to the event, you may have to scramble a bit to find them. The event is the pinnacle of the season and will display the talents of the very best players in hockey this year.
The 58th game will not be held until 2011 because of an Olympic season, so if you want a chance to see the all stars after the 57th NHL All-Star game you will have to wait until then. For now, go see the players who have earned the right to play as all stars. The game will be televised and is set to begin at 6 pm on the 25th of January. You can check out the all star rosters online to see if your all-star was voted to be on the team.
