During this event there is no direct reference to the team of each of the players and it is a chance for all the players in the game to demonstrate their skills in this showcase event. The game is played with NBA Basketball rules, but there are some differences which occur in this event only.
The Live NBA event is a weekend long affair. The All Star game is typically held on Sunday night with a number of events and exhibitions taking place during the weekend. On game day, you will find these exceptional players delivering what the fans want in terms of slam dunks and some pretty spectacular skills. There is usually a celebrity guest who sings the Star Spangled Banner before the game begins and the event is sprinkled with celebrity performances.
Some of the events you can look forward to during All Star Weekend are the infamous three point shootout, the slam dunk contest, and a skill challenge. Prior to 1994, the weekend also featured a legends classic that included retired players of the NBA competing in a game similar to the All Star game. Unfortunately, this favorite event was canceled because of player injuries that occurred each time the game was played.
NBA All Star Players Selection Process
There are a couple of ways that the NBA All Star players are selected and the game traditionally matches the best players from the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference. How those players are determined to be the very best happens because of input from the fans. The first method that is used to select the players comes from a fan ballot. The players who receive the most votes are chosen to be the starting players. The reserves in the game are chosen by the head coaches of each side. The interesting, and some say fascinating, aspect of the player selection is that the head coaches are not allowed to choose players from their regular season teams.
The coaches are chosen strictly according to the number of wins they have for their regular team during the course of the season. There is a rule in place that stipulates that there cannot be a repeat of coaches over two seasons. This was put into place after Pat Riley of the Los Angeles Lakers coached the Western Conference team eight seasons in a row. In the event that the same coach has a winning team in the following season after coaching the All Stars, the coach with the second highest number of wins will coach the All Star game.
