Thanksgiving 2008 – It’s All About Tradition and Simplicity
Tuesday, November 25th, 2008Thanksgiving 2008 is upon us and because of an unsettled economy this year Thanksgiving 2008 sales are forecast to be down, so people are focusing on the simpler aspects of the holiday. This year, it’s all about tradition.
The 2008 thanksgiving day is celebrated on Thursday, November 27th in USA and on Monday, October 13th in Canada.
According to the American Farm Bureau, prices for the traditional parts of the Thanksgiving feast increased slightly. Last year, the price of a usual menu for a family of 10 people, was $42.35. This year, the price is $44.61. This price includes favorites such as turkey, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, rolls, butter, peas, carrots, celery, coffee and milk.
The biggest price increase is for turkey. A 16-lb turkey costs about $19.09, or about $1.19 per pound, an increase of nine cents per pound.
Many people are offsetting the price increase by taking advantage of special deals. Many local supermarkets offer free turkeys with the purchase of a certain amount of groceries, usually about $50. Many other supermarkets and restaurants offer complete take-out meals for a price in the range of $50 to $75 for about 10 people.
Roast turkey is still by far the entrée of choice for most people, but many are discovering other alternatives. Grilled turkey, deep-fried turkey and turkey kabobs are only a few of the many ways people are trying to make their own traditions. “Tofurky” is a tofu-based turkey substitute enjoyed by vegans on Thanksgiving and other holidays. It is surprisingly flavorful and even includes “wish sticks” instead of traditional turkey wishbones.
The other Thanksgiving meal components have healthier alternatives too: Mashed potatoes can be moistened with broth rather than with butter. Pumpkin pie can be made with skim milk, sugar substitutes and low fat graham cracker crusts etc. There are many recipes for these items online.
While food is a main part of any Thanksgiving feast, it is not the only part by any means.
In keeping with the original intent of the Thanksgiving holiday, many people begin the day by attending church services, commemorating the Pilgrims’ gratitude for surviving their first harsh years in North America.
Thanksgiving has also resulted in several television traditions. For example, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, made famous by the movie “Miracle on 34th Street”, is “must-see TV” for many children. This extravaganza includes many live performances. This year’s edition will include performances by Tony, award winner and Emmy nominee Kristen Chenoweth, teen star Miley Cyrus, David Archuleta, James Taylor, Trace Adkins and Darius Rucker. The thanksgiving parade 2008 airs on NBC from 9 a.m to noon EST (eastern standard time).
New York is not the only city to host Thanksgiving Day parade. Other cities, including Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore and Philadelphia each have their own versions. Each of these parades features a visit by that familiar jolly old elf. Santa loves to start the Christmas shopping season and usually get the key to the city when he visits. Those who come to watch the parades may be able to tour the warehouse where the floats are constructed to watch how such big events come together.
Another tradition is to watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It is one of a triumvirate of Peanuts holiday specials. Who can forget the mishaps poor old Charlie Brown endures when Peppermint Patty invites herself and Marcy for Thanksgiving dinner when all he can really make is toast and popcorn. If you missed the television broadcast, buy or rent the DVD.
Most television channels schedule family-friendly movies and specials on Thanksgiving Day, including Casper, Scooby Doo and the first of many seasonal showings of holiday classics such as “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” and “A Christmas Story.” It’s a great way to keep kids occupied while the grown ups discuss the gift options and other Christmas plans.
One aspect of that guys love is Thanksgiving Football. The Detroit Lions started the tradition of a Thanksgiving Day parade in 1934 and has hosted a game each year since, except during World War II. This year, the team has the dubious distinction of being the only winless team in the NFL. On Thanksgiving Day, they will play the Tennessee Titans in an effort to break their 11-game losing, while streak Jesse McCartney will perform at half-time.
Other NFL games include the Dallas Cowboys hosting the Seattle Seahawks (the Jonas Brothers will perform at halftime) and the Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Arizona Cardinals (halftime entertainment was not announced).
The NFL has a new “Play 60″ campaign designed to encourage children to be active for at least 60 minutes a day. The Thanksgiving Day games will feature teens and children singing the national anthem. Public service announcements featuring NFL players will air during the game and local youth football teams will lead the pro teams onto the field at the start of each game.
While the guys will be in the living room watching the games of their choice, in all likely hood, many of the women will be resting up for their big day. For better or worse, many call the day after Thanksgiving “Black Friday“. It is considered the busiest shopping day of the year and the day that puts most retail businesses “in the black” (or profitable) and “out of the red.” Avid shoppers will be scouring the internet and their Thanksgiving Day newspapers and planning their routes for the early hours on Friday when most stores will be open extra early, some as early as midnight.
While these events are important and highly anticipated, the most important part of Thanksgiving is getting together with family and friends. Many people save up throughout the year to make sure they get home for Thanksgiving. The holiday marks one of the busiest times for airports, bus stations and train stations. It is wise to have reservations well in advance.
It may also be surprising to note that the day before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days for bars, clubs and movie theaters. Young adults use that day to wind down from busy school and work schedules and so head out for a night on the town.
Thanksgiving Day is a well-loved tradition. Even with a tight economy, people will find a way to savor the tastes, smells and sights of the intro to the holiday season and an American thanksgiving.

Bigg Boss 2 Winner – Ashutosh Kaushik
Sunday, November 23rd, 2008Bigg Boss 2 Winner – Ashutosh Kaushik’s family celebrate his win of the Big Boss Season 2 Jumbo Finale held, that was held on 22nd November.

Bigg Boss 2 is one of the latest reality TV program being aired on Indian Television. It is basically the Indian version of the famous British show Big Brother , which was developed by Endemol in Netherlands.
Big Boss 2 is the second part of the earlier Indian reality TV show, Big Boss. It was telecast from 17 August 2008, on the relatively new TV channel, Colors Viacom 18, with the final slotted for November 24, 2008. Though this program may be available on most local cable networks, Direct to Home satellite operators of India also broadcast the show.
The host of the show is the sizzling Shilpa Shetty, the winner of the fifth series of Big Brother in United Kingdom and more famously known as the Queen of “Latke-Jhatkes”. She replaces the host of Big Boss 1, the popular actor, Arshad Warsi. At the launch of the show, fourteen housemates who had been handpicked for the show entered the house to compete for the grand prize money of 1 crore rupees.
Big Boss 2 Winner
Although the core concept remained the same, it would be incorrect to say that Big Boss 2 was a continuation of Big Boss. Big Boss 2 is different from its younger sibling series in that, unlike Big Boss, the housemates are not really celebrities. Instead they are all, ‘newsmakers’, and most of them are related to Bollywood, Indian television and other reality shows.
The basic concept of the show is that the 14 housemates, who are strangers to each other, have to spend 98 days locked in a single house. These inmates have no access to the outside world, no communication in the form of telephone, newspapers or other people and have no entertainment in the form of television or radio shows.
They have to live with one another and perform individually assigned tasks while being under surveillance24 x 7. This constant surveillance is achieved with the help of 32 cameras which are strategically placed throughout the house. This house, located at Lonavala, a hill station about 100 km east of Mumbai, is much more modernized and stylish than the house used for the first season of Big Boss. The house boasts of a contemporary gym which the contestants can use, but even here cameras track every movement of the contestants.
The different housemates of Big Boss 2 are as follows:
1. Ketki Dave – the famous Indian TV actress of the trademark “Arra-ra-ra” fame, which she had developed from the equally famous serial ‘Kyunki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu’. In addition to this serial, she has acted in numerous movies.
2. Zulfi Sayeed is a famous Indian actor and model who has acted in movies like Taj Mahal. He has also been voted as one of the top 100 handsome men in India.
3. Raja Chaudhari- though not famous for his own worth, is well-known as the husband of actress, Shweta Tiwari of the TV serial “Kasauti Zindagi Ki”. He is remembered for the drama that unfolded between him and Shweta during a reality show.
4. Monika Bedi is an Indian actress who gained fame because of her involvement with Abu Salem. Her item number in the first episode of Big Boss 2 is said to have been her first performance after 8 years.
5. Rahul Mahajan is not a celebrity, but instead, he is the son of the Indian politician, Pramod Mahajan. With the latest tiffs the Mahajan family has been facing, the family had sent Rahul to the show.
6. Rakhi Vijan is the lovable “Sweety” of the Indian serial, Hum Paanch. She had actually disappeared from the television scene since then. Though she had gained on years, everyone was nevertheless happy to see her on Big Boss 2.
7. Ahsaan Qureshi is famous for his unique and poetic style of comedy. It was after participating in the Indian comedy show, ‘Indian Laughter Challenge’ that he has grown in popularity.
8. Aleena Wadia is not a celebrity, but just a plain old, 21 years old girl on Big Boss 2.
9. Sambhavna Seth is a small time actress, who has an item number in the Hindi movie, 36, China Town to her credit.
10. Payal Rohatgi is not a famous face either. She is a model who has done a few commercials and music videos. She has also done a few flicks in movies like 36 China town and it is rumored that Rahul Mahajan had gotten divorced because of her. This makes Big Boss 2 even more interesting to watch.
11. Ashutosh Kaushik is the winner of the TV show MTV Roadies 5.0. Nothing more is known of this small town dhaba owner who deserves the prize money of Big Boss 2. He is now the Big Boss of Bigg Boss 2.
12. Debojit Saha is from Bengal, and is a winner of the musical television show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2005.
13. Sanjay Nirupam is a Congress Party politician who looks to have joined Big Boss 2 to polish his political career.
14. The last contestant for Big Boss 2 is Jade Goody. She is an English actress, who was in Big Brother with Shilpa Shetty, and rose in popularity for her racial comments against Shilpa Shetty. An interesting contestant of Big Boss 2.
The rules of the game are that every week, the contestants have to nominate contestants for eviction from the show. The votes of the Indian Viewers finally decides which contestant is to be evicted.
The first nominations for eviction from Big Boss 2, which were made on the very first day itself, were Raja Choudhary and Sanjay Nirupam. On the second day of the show, Jade Goody left the show on hearing of her cervical cancer and the fist person to be evicted from Big Boss 2 was Sanjay Nirupam.
He was followed by Rakhi Tandon, Monica Bedi, Ketki Dave and Alina Wadia who was evicted on September 19, 2008. The former Miss India and Miss World, Diana Hayden then joined Big Boss 2 as a wild card entrant on 15th September, 2008. Other exciting episode of Big Boss was the fake eviction of Raja, which was staged on 26th September. Raja stayed in a secret room for three days before returning to the house to surprise everyone.
The next elimination was of Sambhawana Seth, followed by the eviction of Payal. Monica re-entered the show through a wild card. Aihsan Quereshi was evicted on 17th October, followed by Debojit, Diana and then Monica. The guests Sambhana and Payal were forced to pack up in 10 minutes, to leave Big Boss house, after which only four inmates, Raja, Rahul, Ashutosh and Zulfi remained in Big Boss 2.
Next in line of eviction were Rahul and Zulfi and the final contest was between Raja and Ashuthosh. Eventually, the small town dhaba owner, Ashutosh Kaushik was declared the winner of Big Boss 2 by Akshay Kumar.
It was the support Ashutosh received from audiences throughout India, especially North India and his home town Saharanpur that saw him emerging as the winner of Big Boss 2. While Ashuthosh as the winner of Big Boss 2 walked away with 1 crore, Rahul Mahajan won a Chevrolet Aveo U-Va car as the Sabse Bada Dilwala title winner of Big Boss 2.
Bandipur National Park

A beautiful forest reserve located in the south state of India, Karnataka, Bandipur National Park was created in the 1930s, making use of the local Maharaja Wodeyar’s hunting lands. The park was then called Venugopal Wildlife Park.
It was in 1941 that Bandipur National Park was expanded to connect to the Nagarhole national park found at its northern edge. Even the Wynad and Madumalai Sanctuaries which were found in its southern edge, and belong to the states of Kerala and Tamilnadu respectively, were adjoined to the park.
Today this whole area makes up the huge Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, one of the many tracts of preserved forest of India. In fact, since 1973, this park has been declared one of the more acclaimed tiger reserves of India.
Climate – Bandipur National Park is mostly warm and comfortable throughout the year where temperatures range from 24 to 28 degrees Celsius. It is only during its short winter from October to January that the temperature falls to the 19 degrees mark. Though monsoon is erratic here, rainfall is usually between June and September.
Flora and fauna of Bandipur National Park
With the Bandipur National Park found in the Indian Deccan plateau area, it lies in the shade of the Western Ghats. The park is full of vegetation and flora that vary from deciduous and evergreen forests to open, grassy woodlands.
You can also find valuable wood such as rosewood and teak here. The Moyar River is called the life of the forest as it waters the park with its two minor distributaries and provides the borderline between the park and the Madumalai Sanctuary.
Bandipur National Park is famous for its Asiatic elephants and these love the park because of its vast, open spaces and visitors get to see elephants in their natural surroundings here. There are many other mammals you will see while in the park such as the Chital, Indian porcupine, ruddy mongoose, leopard cat, four-horned antelope and wild boar chital.
Bandipur Forest Route
Bandipur National Park is found on the Mysore-Ooty highway and the best way to travel to the park is by bus. There are regular and express state buses traveling between Ooty and Mysore, which pass through the borders of the park and stop at the Forest Department Center.
Bandipur National Park is a 2 ½ hour drive from Mysore and it takes 3 hours to reach it from Ooty. While the nearest train station is in Mysore (at a distance of 65km), the nearest international airport is in Bangalore (at a distance of 204km).
Accommodation and Travel tips
There are many lodges, cottages and rest houses here and these are maintained by the forest department. These places of accommodation are all reasonably priced and great for enjoying nature when in the park.
It is always better to wear light, cotton clothing during summer here but if you are visiting in winter, take along some light, woolen garments. However if you visit in the rainy season, carry raincoats as it can be rather windy, which makes umbrellas useless.

Gmail Themes

Google added a new Gmail Themes feature on Wednesday, Nov 20th, that will allow you to Customize the look and feel of your Gmail Account.
Currently you have a choice of abut 30 new gmail themes that can be accessed via Settings > Themes (check out the details below). At present they do not allow you to create your own customized themes. Gmail will soon allow you to come with your own customized themes since this is just the beginning of the experiment.
These new themes are definitely a big improvement over the old boring style. I’m currently using the “Shiny theme“, which I feel is very sleek, clean and professional.
Why can’t I see this new Gmail Themes Feature in my Account
Google usually takes some time to actually roll-out these things. I wonder how long it will be before this actually goes live. They are gradually rolling out the themes for Gmail starting with its selected users, and will be available to all in a couple of days.

How to Change your Gmail theme
- Login to your Gmail Account
- Click on the Settings link (on the top right corner)
- You will see an additional ‘Themes tab‘ as the last tab of your Settings Area. If you don’t see the new ‘Themes’ tab, just wait a while. Google is still rolling out their theme feature to its large user base.
- Click on any theme from the list of themes and your new preferences will be saved.
- You can always switch back to the previous theme by selecting “Classic” in the Theme Settings page.
Wait.. Google is not done yet. Google is said to also integrate Social networking functionality to your Gmail Accounts very soon.
Eight by Ten Movie Preview (Tasveer)
Thursday, November 20th, 2008Eight by ten (earlier named Tasveer) is expected to be Akshay’s another triumph. It is a movie from the thriller genre and should attest him as a champion of this kind of film as well. He has already done well in such kind of movies and he has showed his mettle in Sangharsh and Bhool Bhulaiyya earlier.
Produced by Percept Picture Company and directed by Nagesh Kukhnoor, the movie has Ayesha Talkia in the lead opposite Akshay Kumar. Supporting roles will be played by Vinod Khanna, Javed Jaffrey, Anant Mahadevan, and the quintessentially beautiful Sharmila Tagore.
A large duration of shooting has been done in Calgary, Canada. The movie was earlier called Tasveer. Nagesh changed its name citing that the earlier name was jinxed. The movie seems to be inspired by Sixth Sense, a tremendous thriller by Night Shyamalan.
Akshay is playing a man with high-degree of mental powers. Reportedly the character cannot be hurt. This again is a take of Shyamalan’s Bruce Willis in Unbreakable. The climax scene is shot under water. Akshaye is tied to chains in the underwater sequence. In one of the path-breaking bollywood stunts, Akshaye jumps into water from height of 160 feet.
The year is touted as a big one for Ayesha too. Her movie “Wanted dead or alive” is slated to be released; this one is opposite Salman Khan. For the uninitiated, Ayesha would be playing Akshay’s wife.
Recently while shooting for Blue, Akshaye was badly injured during an underwater scene; he was to work opposite a group of diabolical sharks. This injury might shelve the floor plans of Eight by Ten a little.

Team India was already on a high prior to the beginning of the one-day series with England. Post their display against Australia, a battle which they won with consummate ease, it was natural to expect that they would come all guns blazing. There were only two doubts.

With further matches, the margin of victory is diminishing and in fact, the third was won through Duckworth Lewis by India. Having said this, Indians are deserving winners and have the sheer joy of being 3-0 up in the series.
Yuvraj has already blasted two centuries and both of them have been a sheer treat to watch. Not only have they been made with silken craft and also powerfully menacing strokes at times, they have also been made at a terrific strike rate; something that has been a common feature with Yuvraj.
