Sunday, November 30th, 2008
The Nissan 370Z as expected stole all the limelight in the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Japanese auto giant has once again proved to the world that when it comes to offering the best, it is the only right choice. A judicious mix of well conceived design and the best-in-class technology, Nissan 370Z offers all that you wanted in a sports car.
Since the launch of the fifth generation in 2003, the 370Z is the first full redesign in the Z series. Hailed by the experts as evolutionary, the 370Z is shaped much like the current 350Z with a new look and feel. The power plant is the same as that in the Infiniti G37. The V6 displacing 3.7-liter is capable of delivering 332 horsepower and 26 mpg on highways. Nissan 370Z offers a downshift rev matching system synchronized with a manual transmission. Built with more light weight materials, the 370Z has a shorter wheelbase thus ensuring better acceleration, cornering, and braking. The 18 and 19 inch wheels and the Brembo brakes are adjusted on a powerful suspension handled by a multi-link setup in the back and a double wishbone setup in the front.
Though shorter in length the Nissan 370Z offers more cargo room as compared to the other models in the Z series. The front and the rear tracks are wider and overall this new Z series is 1.1 inches broader than its predecessor. The design resembles the boomerang-style headlights and taillights with Z-branded side marker lights. So gear yourself up for a more luxurious interior experience. The steering wheel is a direct import from the new ’09 Maxima and so are the HVAC and navigation controls. Seats are equipped with larger bolsters and the extruding aluminum brace behind the seats comes in the place of the larger strut-tower brace thus increasing the cargo space.

The 370Z is fresh and handsome in many ways – just try it out. The 370Z launch will come in two trim levels – base and Touring. It seems that Yutaka Katayama has been the biggest influencer on 370Z. The design criterion is based on a style that sets it apart from other coupes, whereby the coupe is designed for safety and comfort. The cut in length has added to the horsepower making it the perfect sports car once again. The main gauge cluster is adjustable with the tachometer in the centre, the speedometer on the right a new driver information display on the left. The push button start and the cup holder are the other interior features. At the top of the center stack is the triple gauge pod that houses the volt and oil gauges. At the farthest binnacle is the clock. This new addition in the Z series is crisper, more purposeful, and even more muscular. The long hood of Nissan 370Z is a sure shot attention grabber. This wider and shorter car enhances the car’s stance and is real fun to drive.

Sunday, November 30th, 2008
All set for the launch, Porsche Panamera is expected to become an instant hit among the car enthusiasts worldwide. The four-door and the four-seated luxury sedan will be a front engined rear wheel drive car. Expectations are rife that the Panamera will offer three engine choices – a 3.6 L V6 which is found in the 2008 Cayenne with a 300 hp in the base Panamera, a turbocharged 4.8 L V8 with 500 hp in the Panamera Turbo, and a 4.8 L V8 with 405 hp in the Panamera S. Experts also anticipate the V-10 and the V-12 engine in the near future.
Scheduled to be pitched against the likes of Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG and Maserati Quattroporte, the Panamera is planning to enter the market as a less expensive alternative. Panamera is going to be the first V8 engine sports car by Porsche ever since 1995. However, it’s interesting to know that the earlier prototypes of four-door sedans such as the 4 door 911 based prototype or the 1991 Porsche 989 prototype never went into production.
Panamera incorporates some of the best styling features and this coupled with state-of-the-art technological specifications would make this car a real bonanza for the potential customers. At 76 inches it is indeed a wide sedan even wider than Mercedes-Benz S-class. The height measures 55.8 inches and the length is 195.7 inches. The power plant is the Volkswagen’s 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower. The Porsche’s new PDK dual-clutch gearbox is expected to appear in all the proposed models.

The rear wheel drive will be the standard though the turbocharged version will be coming with an all-wheel-drive. The interior is cozy and seems to be more driver-friendly. The driver-oriented dashboard and the folding rear seat for increased cargo space are some of the other attractions in this model. The 911-style window arc is much more evident and the elongated headlight seems to be an import from those of the earlier generations of 911s. The front design suggests a very similar front to that of 911 and Boxster. Though the design elements are taken from the 911 range yet there are significant differences. The taillights are comparatively larger and they move into the car’s rear flanks. The four door coupe keeps pace with the design offered by most of its competitors in this segment.

Porsche is launching the model with a two-fold objective – marketing it both as a true sports car and also as a family car with the four full seats and increased cargo space with sliding rear seat. The initial reports suggest that the base car will come with a sticker price of $127,000. Leipzig is all geared to do the final assembly. Though the price tag seems to be quite on the higher side yet Porsche is hopeful of selling 20,000 Leipzig, Germany-built Panameras annually. As per the current reports the production will start in April 2009 and at least during the start, Porsche will keep the production rate at around 20,000 cars per year.

Posted in World 2 Comments »Mr. Terrorist, What A Coward You Are!!!
Friday, November 28th, 2008
I had flown in from Hong Kong around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday 26th November and had planned to leave for Sri Lanka the same night. I had broken journey in Mumbai only so that I could attend the new Parsi Punchayet Board’s meeting with Mr. Nusli and Mr. Ness Wadia. I left Neville House around 9 p.m. and went home for a quick bite before continuing for the airport. As I was about to leave, news about the terror attacks began to filter in. Initially it looked like only two of Mumbai’s best hotels in South Mumbai were under siege. But, soon enough there were reports of two blasts in my own neighborhood in Mazagaon. The taxi that blew up in Andheri was reportedly headed for the International Airport. My travel program reluctantly had to be aborted.
Most of Thursday was spent glued to the television. It was heart wrenching watching the Taj hotel billowing thick black smoke and the leaping flames menacing around the grand dome. Even more heart wrenching was the sight of blood and destruction at Café Leopold owned by family friends – the Dehmeries. Images of many a memorable party that I had enjoyed here with good friends began flashing through my mind. I have always described Cafe Leopold as a Happy and Happening place. But what happened on 11/26 was far from happy.
Material destruction can be compensated for and even rebuilt. But, alas, what about the loss of innocent lives? Can that be compensated for? Can the dead be brought back to life? Whose war are we fighting? What has Mumbai done to deserve this?
And where, pray where, were the defenders of the ‘sons of the soil’ when Mumbai’s sacred soil was splattered with the blood of its innocent sons and daughters?
Yes, I know I am asking too many questions – some rhetorical and some just too uncomfortable. But do we really have answers? I don’t know.
Today on Friday, 28th November I am at my office since morning. Most offices are working but with thinner attendance. Most people are still in a state of shock and disbelief.
I was not born in Mumbai but its the city I grew up in. It’s given me good education, a wonderful career and lots to feel proud about. I love my city very much and therefore I consider all this loss and destruction too personal.
The Taj Hotel and Colaba is situated less than a kilometer away from my office. As I write this, the terrorists are still holed up there and my coming to work today is a symbol of this city’s resilience. Yes, Mr. Terrorist, you have tried to scare me and the rest of the citizens of this great city. But NO, we are not scared.
Yes, Mr. Terrorist, you have succeeded in getting me and everyone else very angry but scared – NO! It’s business as usual and while we mourn for our dead and despise the destruction you have wrecked, we resolve to rise like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes to live another day and face the challenge.
And, Mr. Terrorist, you and your group have been cowards, attacking innocent and defenseless people. You have won no great battle. No medals await you in this life or the next, though you may have been brainwashed and assured about the latter. Of course, you will personally come to know more about this fact when you get there and it’s going to be sooner in your case than most of us, Mr. Terrorist. Those who live by the sword also die by the sword.
In conclusion, Mr. Terrorist, I dare say, the average Mumbaikar is a braver and greater soldier than any one of you. You may be trained as Commandos for Carnage but we have been trained to be Commanders of our own lives. We command care and respect for our fellow human beings. A pity no one ever cared nor will ever care for you, Mr. terrorist!
Yes, indeed this great city shall bloom again. But you, Mr. Terrorist, are doomed!
Rest in Peace Mr. Terrorist and let us live in Peace!

How to Transfer Wordpress Blog to another Host
Friday, November 28th, 2008There are many reasons for one to consider transferring a Wordpress blog from one host to another, for example from BlueHost to HostGator. One of the most common reasons for this transfer is the unreliable service of the original host, where downtime could be as much as several minutes a day. If you are experiencing such problems, here is some advice on how to move a Wordpress Blog to another host.
The first thing to do is to upgrade your Wordpress installation so that it matches the script version of the new host. Then you have to backup all your files and databases on the Wordpress blog, including all uploaded files, images, plug-ins and theme files.
Back up all files and folders
All personal files that have to be transferred also need to be backed up. You could use the help of an FTP program such as FileZilla to do this, for its ease of use and keeping files on your hard disk in a proper manner.
Make sure you identify the database name of your Wordpress blog and then back it up using phpMyadmin and it’s better to backup not one, but several copies of your database. With your database, files to be transferred and all folders and files in the wp-content folder, you can proceed to the next step of this transfer.
With the help of your domain registrar control panel, you have to change the name server of your existing domain to the name server of your new hosting company. This step takes some time to complete; so in the meantime, ensure that you can access your FTP server, to where you upload files to the new host with the help of the FTP program.
If the FTP program connects correctly, use Fantastico or any other script installation service found on cPanel to do a fresh Wordpress installation on your new host. With this done, the database has to be deleted.
Approach the new host technical support for more memory space
The next step lies in using the FTP program to upload files from your wp-content folder to the same folder of the new installation. After uploading, your old blog’s database has to be uploaded to your new host with the help of phpMyAdmin. For databases larger than 8MB’s you have to request the technical support of your new hosting company to import it for you.
The last step in the transfer of your Wordpress blog to a new host lies in connecting the new Wordpress installation to the imported database. This is done by editing the required database information found in the wp-config.php file of the root folder of the installation. This has to be done according to the name of the imported database, your user name, password and the host name, which is usually localhost.
By following all these steps you should be able to have your new blog working as usual on the new host.

Thursday, November 27th, 2008One of the many visa cards available is the visa gift card. These cards are accepted worldwide wherever visa debit cards are accepted, and have a few unique features and functions. These cards are best used, when on a budget, or when you only want to spend a fixed amount of money every week.
Visa gift cards also make a great gift for family or friends. Although you can get visa gift cards from your
credit card rewards program, if you want it as a present for someone, it is better to give a more personal gift by buying gift cards from your favorite shops or stores.
Visa gift cards are usually activated once they are bought; however if you find that your card is not activated, you just have to follow the activation instructions that come with the card. It is used just as you would use a credit card and you have to remember to sign on the back of your card to ensure authorization of it.
Remember to sign purchase receipts
All purchase receipts also have to be signed for proof that you have made the purchase so always take a copy of the purchase receipt with you. Always check the balance of the card, before conducting any transactions with it.
As visa gift cards have a limited amount that can be spent, purchases that are greater in value than the balance may get declined. With each purchase, the purchase amount is automatically deducted from your account balance.
In a bid to provide fraud protection, visa gift cards are covered under a policy that protects the card from misuse. If you lose your card, or it gets stolen, you just have to report it and the account is protected from any possible misuse. It is mandatory that you note your card number so that you can cancel it and get a new one issued, if required.
Visa Gift Cards Usage Tips
Retain all purchase receipts
One of the drawbacks of a visa gift card is that with wanton spending, you may end up with just a few dollars or pounds remaining on the card, which you will then not be able to use. To solve this problem, make it a point to keep receipts of all your visa gift card purchases, and circle the amount remaining on the card.
If you have some money on your card but it’s not sufficient to make a payment, it is best to inform the sales agent that you intend to pay only a part of the payment using the visa gift card and that the rest will be paid for using another method of payment so as to prevent a possible card decline.
If you had bought gifts using the visa gift card, it is always best to keep the empty visa cards. This is because if the person wishes to exchange or return the gift, they can do it only if they have the original card.
With all these tips on the use and handling of a visa gift card, there shouldn’t be anything stopping you from getting one for yourself or giving it to someone special as a gift.
