Saturday, July 26th, 2008Importance of Directory Submissions
Directory submissions these days are really time consuming, sometimes frustrating. Also, they are being increasingly devalued by Search engines. Putting all your time & effort into submitting to 1000’s of directories is certainly a waste of time. Just submit your site into targeted niche directories that has quality and high PR, but those high PR directories ask you to pay for it. Mass directory submission is a lame practice that sites with no content and low traffic use.
Although Niche Directory submissions have their own importance, it is only one part of marketing and SEO. I would prefer to do the following instead, for effective link building;
- Blog Comments : Posting useful comments to big dofollow blogs.
- Article Directory submissions are better than Link Directories.
- Social Bookmarking
- Forums : Signature Links
- Niche Directory Submission can bring you natural traffic
The best thing is to create high quality content that automatically fetches links from other sites.
I think you should focus on quality directories like ;

DMOZ (http://www.dmoz.org)

Yahoo Directory (http://dir.yahoo.com/)

Business (http://www.business.com/)

Librarians Internet Index (http://www.lii.org/)

Best of the Web http://botw.org/
Other well known Directories include;
- Starting Point (http://www.stpt.com/)
- JoeAnt (http://www.joeant.com/)
- About.com (http://www.about.com/)

Saturday, July 26th, 2008There are plenty of SEO software’s available today. It’s a difficult decision to determine which would best suit your SEO requirement.
People say they use only seo software or do it all manually. All the SEO experts I know, use a combination of manual work as well as use seo software.
Besides being best suited for reporting, there are things that seo software can do that will save you time like;
- Create quick Html/pdf SEO reports for your Client
- Automatic Site Submission to a huge number of Search Engines and Directories
- Rank checking tools for multiple search engines etc
Most SEO software is looked down on, since SEO can be done much better manually, but as an user who has considerable SEO experience, i can safely say, SEO software’s makes your life a tad easier.
Some of the well known SEO Software are;

AddWeb

iBusiness Promoter

WebCEO
In my opinion the best seo software is MS Excel, which i use to create spread sheets to track on going SEO work. Besides that, you many need SEO Software for Automatic Site Submission to a huge number of search engines and directories which would otherwise take ages when done manually. I use IBP software for this purpose although Manual submission is still the best for Important Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) & Directories (Dmoz, Yahoo Directory).
It is agreed by now that seo software must just be used to assist you in some tedious jobs. Lets figure out which is the best SEO software used by most seo experts today. Please take the poll.

Posted in Hindi 3 Comments »CSS – Cascading Style Sheets
Friday, July 25th, 2008CSS was introduced by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and its supported by all major browsers. Styles define, as to how to display HTML elements and are stored in files with .CSS extension. These are saved in external files and will save a lot of re-work as it can be reusable and capable in changing the appearance and layout of all the pages in our Application/Webpages, just by editing a single CSS document. It also supports Multiple style definitions by having them cascaded into one. It allows developers to control the style and layout of multiple Web pages all at once.
As a Web developer we can define a style for each HTML element and apply it to as many Web pages as we want. To make a global change, we simply have to change the style, and all elements in the Web will be updated automatically.
When there is more than one style specified for an HTML element, then, an inline style (the specification inside an HTML element) would have the highest priority and will override the other style declarations, which would be a style declared inside the <head> tag, in an external style sheet, or in a browser.
The CSS declaration is split into three parts: selector, property and value:
selector {property: value}
The selector is the element that needs to be defined. The property is the attribute to change and each property shall have a value. The property and value will be within curly braces and separated by a colon.
eg. body {color: blue}
If there are multiple words for a value then values need to be mentioned within quotes.
[sourcecode language='css']
p {font-family: “times new roman”}
[/sourcecode]
For specifying more than one property, we must separate each pair of property and its values with a semicolon. The example below shows how to define a center aligned paragraph, with a red text color:
[sourcecode language='css']
p {text-align:center;color:red}
[/sourcecode]
The best practice will be to describe each property in a single line if more than one property is to be specified.
[sourcecode language='css']
p
{
text-align: left;
color: blue;
font-family: times
}
[/sourcecode]
Usage of CSS Styles in different ways
By Grouping
We can even group certain selectors for which the same style is to be specified. For implementing this we need to separate each selector by comma.
In the example below we can group all the elements.
All elements will be displayed in red text color:
[sourcecode language='css']
para1,para2,para3
{
color: red
}
[/sourcecode]
By using class Selector
Class selector is used to define different styles for the same type of HTML element.
If we would like to have two types of paragraphs in your document: Say for instance One right-aligned paragraph, and another center-aligned. We can declare it as
[sourcecode language='css']
p.right {text-align: right}
p.center {text-align: center}
[/sourcecode]
And can use in our HTML code as
This paragraph will be right-aligned
[sourcecode language='html']
[/sourcecode]
This paragraph will be center-aligned
[sourcecode language='html']
[/sourcecode]
Note: To apply more than one class per given element, the syntax is:
[sourcecode language='html']
This is a paragraph.
[/sourcecode]
The paragraph above will be styled by the class “center” AND the class “bold”.
We can also omit the tag name in the selector to define a style that will be used by all HTML elements that have a certain class. In the example below, all HTML elements with class=”center” will be center-aligned:
[sourcecode language='css']
.center {text-align: center}
[/sourcecode]
In the below code both the h1 element and the p element have class=”center”. This means that both elements will follow the rules in the “.center” selector:
[sourcecode language='html']
This heading will be center-aligned
This paragraph will also be center-aligned.
[/sourcecode]
We can set style rule to HTML elements for a particular attribute. This will match all input elements that has a type attribute with a value of “text”:
[sourcecode language='html']
input[type="text"] {background-color: blue}
[/sourcecode]
By using id selector
id selector can also be used to define styles for HTML elements. The id selector is defined using # symbol.
The style rule below will match the element that has an id attribute with a value of “green”:
[sourcecode language='css']
#red {color: red}
[/sourcecode]
The style rule below will match the p element that has an id with a value of “para”:
[sourcecode language='css']
p#para
{
text-align: center;
color: red
}
[/sourcecode]
Comments are mentioned in CSS within the tag /* */ which would explain the purpose or any other related information
about the code.
[sourcecode language='css']
/* This is a comment */
p
{
text-align: center;
/* This is another comment */
color: black;
font-family: arial
}
[/sourcecode]
Different ways of inserting CSS
Style sheet can be inserted into webpages in three different ways : External Style Sheets, Internal Style Sheet or Inline Styles.
External style sheet
External style sheet can be made use when a same style is to applied across several pages or application. The whole look and feel of the application could be changed by just making changes in a single file. Each page is to be linked to the style sheet using the <link> tag.
The <link> tag is to be present inside the head section:
[sourcecode language='html']
[/sourcecode]
Thus the browser would read the style definitions from the specified css file, and would display the web pages
accordingly.
Internal Style Sheet
An internal style sheet is ideal to use when a single document needs to have a separate style. Internal styles are defined in the head section of the document by making using of the <style> tag
[sourcecode language='html']
[/sourcecode]
Inline Styles
An inline style is very clumsy as it mixes content with presentation. This can be made use only when a single occurrence of an element is to have a style. To use inline styles the style attribute is to be made use in the relevant tag. The style attribute can contain any CSS property. The example shows how to change the color and the
left margin of a paragraph:
[sourcecode language='html']
Content of the paragraph
[/sourcecode]
Usage of Multiple Style Sheets
If some properties has been set for the same selector in different style sheets, the values will be inherited from the more specific style sheet.
For example, an external style sheet has these properties for the h3 selector:
[sourcecode language='css']
h3
{
color: red;
text-align: left;
font-size: 10pt
}
[/sourcecode]
And an internal style sheet has these properties for the h3 selector:
[sourcecode language='css']
h3
{
text-align: right;
font-size: 20pt
}
[/sourcecode]
If the page with the internal style sheet also links to the external style sheet the properties for h3 will be:
[sourcecode language='css']
color: red;
text-align: right;
font-size: 20pt
[/sourcecode]
The color would be inherited from the external style sheet and the text-alignment and the font-size will be replaced by the internal style sheet.

Thursday, July 24th, 2008The frenetic lifestyles of today, the need to stay ahead of the rat race has led to a plethora of diseases and health problems. In an age where fast food and instant gratification win over centuries old traditions and relaxed living, there is little doubt that stress levels will skyrocket. Here are some of the common health problems associated with these times.
Cancer
It has been estimated that one of out every four women in America is going to suffer from breast cancer at some point of time or the other. As if this wasn’t shocking, women smokers are on the rise thereby increasing this risk factor manifold. High levels of stress, anxiety, the pressures of modern living and smoking as well as alcohol consumption are all culprits in causing cancer. The only way out is to eat healthy, exercise regularly and go for regular check ups with the doctor to look for any traces of cancer.
Back pain
This is mostly on account of improper posture. The numerous hours spent sitting in front of a computer can wreak havoc on our backs. This is why doctors advise taking frequent breaks in between work and stretching the back muscles. This way, the back does not suffer undue strain and can ease up in between.
Diabetes
Diabetes happens when the body’s resistance to insulin goes down. Sugar can no longer be transformed and this leads to diabetes. While earlier Type II diabetes was primarily associated with only adults, these days even kids have begun to have this disease. The only way out of this is to keep weight under control through regular exercise, avoiding sugary and starchy foods and generally taking insulin shot on a regular basis as prescribed by the doctor.
Digestive problems
Junk food and improper eating habits are all reasons for various digestive problems. With both parents working and pursuing active careers there is no time to cook wholesome homemade food. Take away foods and Pizzas are all the rage because they are convenient. However, good health relies on age old traditions of nutritious food cooked at home. Having a balanced diet that encompasses all major food groups is critical to ensuring health and freedom from digestive problems.
High blood pressure
One of the biggest culprits of high blood pressure is stress and anxiety. The accelerated pace of today’s living is taking a toll on our bodies. The lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyles all play a part. Fast foods and junk food also add to the increase blood pressure in our bodies. The way out is to exercise regularly, eat healthy and in moderation and avoid stress.
Sleep disorders
Insomnia or the inability to get sleep is another common disorder that affects many young people of today. Late night parties and high work loads in the office can all result in long term sleep deprivation. This in turn results in an inability to get sleep even under normal circumstances. Stress and excess worry could also result in insomnia. The way out is to indulge in relaxing and soothing activities like listening to music or reading a nice book.

Thursday, July 24th, 2008AB’s baby has come out with a superhero movie “Drona” scheduled to release on October 2nd 2008 and directed by Goldie Behl (Sonali Bendre’s husband and Abhishek’s childhood friend). The movie also stars Priyanka Chopra who plays Bachchan’s body guard, Kay Kay Menon who plays the villain and Jaya Bachchan.
By the trailer, I felt as if the movie is a cross between “The Mummy”, “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Krishh”. A lot of special effects has been done in this movie and also the stunts and various martial arts are choreographed by Hollywood’s leading technicians.
Imran Khan’s new movie with Sanjay Dutt KIDNAP and Salman Khan starrer Wanted : Dead and Alive will release on the same blockbuster weekend. So watch out for Oct 2nd.
So this one looks good, but Sci-Fi Super Hero movies in India are normally very crude like “Love Story 2050″ or the cult classic “Rudraksh”
. Let’s wait and see if Abhishek’s latest film gives India a new super hero !

Indian Reality Shows- A Comparison
Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008Small screen is no more small. If anything, it has become the battle field for some of the biggest big screen actors. Gone are the days when small screen meant Ekta Kapoors and the likes’ mindless soap operas with one sari clad weeping women and a bitch. These are the days of reality shows, shows that extend beyond exercising one’s vocal cords or shaking a limb. TV shows such the survivor, the amazing race, fear factor created records of their own in the West and now Indian television is fast trying to tread this reality road. Channels are fighting tooth and claw with one another, trying to woo the audience with every possible means- from the attraction of a star studded judges panel or host, to the lure of offensive amounts of money and even the romance of playing with ones fears, they are offering it all. In this flood of reality shows, three stand out above the others, owing to sheer star power- “Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain”, “Dus ka Dum” and most recently “Khatron Ki Khiladi”.
Khatron Ki Khiladi

This is the much hyped show airing on the newly launched channel colors with Akshay Kumar as the primary Khiladi. I had approached the show with a lot of expectations but it turned out to be very boring television in the end, so much so that I too nodded my head vigorously at the end of the first stunt and then switched channels. The hype too much, the flaws too many in this desi “take” on fear factor. The first thing I found a little pesky was the chanting of “AUM BHOOR BHUWAH SWAHA..”. Why! Oh Why! tell me, do the participants need to ask for God’s safety net? Are the stunts poorly designed or are they prone to accidents? Is the show violating safety standards? But ok fine India is a spiritual country, we trust in God blah blah.. so lets move past this, although not before I say that the chant totally failed to achieve what it had been designed to achieve- to inspire fear in the viewers.
Now the rest of the show is pretty boring. The show lacks the urgency, so much an integral part of its fountainhead (fear factor). It lacks the display of pure nerves, rivalry, determination, all the essential elements that make fear factor what it is. If one is in a game show like this, one should be there to win, not to make friends and this very vital point is completely missed. There is no adrenalin rush at any moment during the show. And if you are expecting a bevy of beautiful, adventerous ladies, you are in for a huge surprise. Not only are they not the “In” kind but they are big time quitters. The stunt doesnot even start when they decide to give up. And to see that happening 13 times over and over again (they will walk to the stunt all dressed up as dare devils only to just quit) is really frustrating.
Enough about the participants, what about the host? Honestly I didnot expect Akshay Kumar to be this bad. I think even his first movie was better than what he is doing now. He is at a complete loss, not knowing what to say or do. His dialogues! “Oh My God”(remember Janice in friends??? to the same effect); its sounds like a fifth class student reading a passage from a social studies book. I would have preferred if the language was not so forcibly Hindi. A little English here and there, a few slang, some swearing would go a long way to make this show watch able. Akshay asks one contestant “Aap in deviyon me se kis ko chunti hain”? For me the entire show reached its nadir just then! Come on man! This is a freaking “khatron” ka show. “Deviyans/Mahtaurmas” have no place here! Perhaps the makers should have stuck to the original concept. Limited the number of participants to a bearable number, put the “aam admi” on the show, who would definitely give his best in all the stunts. Lastly if a Non Indian watches the show he would definitely think “shucks! what a bunch of quitters”!
Rating:2.5/5
Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain

The Indian version of “Are you smarter than a fifth grader” with host none other than the King Khan himself. This show first dared to ask Indians if they are smarter than a 5th standard student and then dared to become a mundane, bovine show, riding on the brand image of Shah Rukh Khan alone. The show did not do well initially and that was artfully attributed to the first IPL season clashing with the show’s timings. Once IPL ended the show’s TRP did go up a few notch, which was definitely been a big relief for StarTelevision. But lets face it, the show as a whole, simply putting, sucks! I watched only a few episodes, that too just because Shah Rukh was the host. The first time I admired his eyes, the second time his biceps the third time his watch, but pretty soon I ran out of King Khan’s parts and accessories to admire and stopped tuning into the show altogether. The questions are not exciting, the emotions repetitive, the humor pretentious. Shah Rukh too fails to strike a cord with the participants or viewers- his dialogues lack the punch, his actions monotonous. It was no wonder that the entire Shah Rukh brigade (Karan Johar, Rani Mukherjee) had to be roped in one day to give a tug to the low TRPs. Watching Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tej Hain is like watching “phir bhi dil hain hindustani” over and over and then over again and the best part of the show are undoubtedly the little kids who help the participants.
Rating:2/5
Dus ka Dum

Money is power this offspring of “The Power of 10″ screams and Yes it is! Surprisingly, I liked this show, not for the money(although this was the initial lure) but in its entirety. I have never really been a fan of Salman Khan. But after watching this show, I am left in no doubts as to why Katrina Kaif and some of the hottest damsels of Bollywood have dated this man! The man is a natural. His jokes are laughable, his mannerism unaffected, his concerns towards each participant, almost believeable. Somehow Salman manages to stay fresh everytime, bringing in some thing new to each episode. Of course besides Salman, credit has to be given to the people who draft the questions. They are really interesting and most often than not, you would find yourself being a part of that question. The show succeeds where the others have failed, in striking empathy with the viewer. The participants too seem to be having a good time on the show and Salman does not shy away from the personal questions that are thrown at him sometime. Even with out the kids, without the stunts, Salman and Co has done a very good job here.
Rating:3.5/5
This is my take on these reality shows. So what do you think?
