New Honda City India

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

The New Honda City is all set for an Indian debut around October 2008. The above mentioned image is an artistic impression & we would update with the actual image very shortly. The year 2008-09 seems to be a year of transformation for the Honda Siel Cars India Ltd as most of the models are being given a new lease of life. There was the all new CR-V which was launched sometime back and they followed it up with the new Accord. Civic is gearing up for a face lift & The Jazz will fill up its small car segment. The current Honda city which is the most popular car in Honda’s stable, would give way for the New Honda City . This latest & next generation model would make its international debut in September 2008 in Thailand.

So as mentioned above here is the actual image of the New Honda City to be launched.

The below mentioned car is an artistic image of the new Honda City

From the first look of the car it seems the design is more European like the Accord. The car looks more sturdier compared to the present model. Wide grills with a huge bumper stamps its presence on the road . The rear is something similar to the BMW 5 series but the tail lamps are more boxy. The V-tec model being launched would be of 120 BHP but its uncertain on the variants to be launched in India.

Below is the artistic image of the car.

Below is the actual image of the car.

The car looks very aggressive & looks like it is ready for the kill. The interiors are very sporty & its the car to watch out for. When we look at the interiors below its more elegant & fresh. The power is just enough to drift through the City.

UPDATE: This much awaited Car might be launched anytime between September-October. As per dealers the Launch would happen in Delhi & they are expected to receive the stock from 25th of September. The model to be launched would be the V-TEC version & there are all possibilities of the existing models to sell alongside the new model. There is quite a buzz that it would be launched around 10th of October but we would keep you updated on the developments.

The new Honda City is priced in the range of Rs 7.7 lakh to Rs 8.9 lakh (Delhi ex-showroom)

Nokia E61i

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

I felt the need for a business phone since I had to send and receive Client’s mails when on the move and also browse regularly. I wanted to pick up a Nokia Handset with blackberry compatibility. My obvious choice at the time of buying was Nokia E61i smart-phone as It has the Nokia standard features which make the navigation easy and also familiar. I bought my Nokia E61i cell phone for 16400 INR(approx 400$) after doing a thorough price check with many dealers. The Nokia E61i has a big 320×240 display which makes browsing much more comfortable on the eye.It also has other features like Blue-tooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, IR, QWERTY keyboard and Blackberry Compatibility. After using it for sometime now, I assure you this phone is absolute value for money.

Pros of Nokia E61i

  • It looks professional with a wide screen appropriate for reading mails / browsing web.
  • Battery backup is good with at least 2 – 3 days battery backup.
  • Comes with a qwerty keyboard which makes life easy to send and receive sms, emails etc for someone who is used to the standard computer keyboards.
  • Its Styling and Design is excellent coming with a metallic finish making it a lot more durable.
  • Comes with useful utilities which are handy in day to day business use like world mate, PowerPoint presenter etc. You can always download free software from the web. I use Opera for Browsing which is very useful. Apart from its blackberry compatibility features, I have it hooked on to my gmail, and have a neat messenger utility which allows text chat on yahoo, msn, gtalk simultaneously integrated into one software. You can download software to view MS Office, Adobe PDF and any zip files.
  • Superb Web interface with Edge or WiFi connectivity to give a laptop like Browsing Experience with complete HTML support. The other day I downloaded a 3rd party You-tube software for mobiles to watch videos and it worked great.

Cons of Nokia E61i

  • Comes with 256 mb card by default.
  • Sound and voice quality i feel is inferior compared to other cheaper Nokia Phones.
  • Sometimes you would experience the phone being a bit slow when you open contacts, messaging applications etc. It takes a lot of time to Reboot.
  • Does not have a built-in GPS navigation capability. We need an external GPS device for Nokia Maps while on the move.
  • The snaps taken using the 2 Mega-pixel camera is not clear in the night mode as it does not have a flash. But the snaps taken in daylight are pretty good.
  • There is no FM radio. Especially needed as memory card is of less storage.
  • It is not shipped with a hands-free for both ears like the N-Series.

Nokia E61i GPRS Settings Vodafone Live

Below are 2 important steps that you need to perform to Start browsing using Vodafone live GPRS connection from your Nokia E61i Handset. These settings are applicable to Vodafone Postpaid Connection only.

1. Activate Vodafone Live

Send sms : ‘ACT VL’ to 111

You will get a message saying that it would be activated within 24 hours.

2. Configure GPRS Settings on your mobile

Send sms : ‘VL’ to 52586.

You will recieve the MMS & GPRS settings from Service Provider.
Select ‘Save’ from options to configure all settings.
Restart your phone. Now you are ready to browse with your Vodafone Live Connection

All in all an IDEAL Business Phone for the price you pay for it.

SQL Tuning

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Tuning in SQl

Oracle’s SQL is a very flexible language. We can make use of many different SQL statements to accomplish the same task. Even though there are several queries and retrieval statements producing similar results, one should make use of the most efficient choice . A SQL choice is optimized only if it produces the accurate results in a short span of time, without overriding the performance of other system resources. Whenever an SQL statement is executed, Oracle first looks for identical statements matching in the context (SGA) area as it holds the SQL statements in memory after parsing. Thus use of Bind variables is advisable when ever possible in place of Literals.

SQL tuning can be done by:

Making use of ROWID where ever possible
Reason:
Every record that is added to the database will have an unique ROWID and will not change until the delete statement is issued on that record. In case a record block or location has been changed for some reason, the original ROWID would still point to the new location or the new ROWID and so on. Thus as far as possible use ROWID to optimize the code for retrievals of a record.

Avoid making use of UNION and instead use UNION ALL
Reason:

UNION ALL includes duplicate rows and does not require a sort. Whereas the UNION operation sorts the result set to eliminate any rows, which are within the sub-queries. As the SORT operation is very expensive in terms of CPU consumption try as far as possible avoiding its use. Unless you require the duplicate rows to be eliminated, use UNION ALL.

Avoid making use of NOT IN and instead use NOT EXISTS for indexed columns
eg.
Normal Query -
[sourcecode language='sql']
select * from emp
where emp_id NOT IN
(select gid from company)
[/sourcecode]

Optimized Query -
[sourcecode language='sql']
select * from emp e
where NOT EXISTS
(select * from company c
where c.gid = e.emp_id)
[/sourcecode]

Avoid using NOT IN and instead use IN with MINUS incase of non indexed columns
eg.
Normal Query -
[sourcecode language='sql']
select * from emp
where emp_id NOT IN
(select gid from company)
[/sourcecode]

Optimized Query -
[sourcecode language='sql']
select * from emp
where emp_id IN
(select emp_id from emp
MINUS select gid from company)
[/sourcecode]

Avoid using EXISTS and instead use Joins for Unique Scan Indexes and tables with less number of records
eg.
Normal Query -
[sourcecode language='sql']
select emp_name,emp_id
from emp
where EXISTS (select * from company where gid = id)
[/sourcecode]

Optimized Query -
[sourcecode language='sql']
select name,id
from emp E,company C
where E.id = C.gid
[/sourcecode]

Avoid using of HAVING clause, instead make use of WHERE clause
Reason:
HAVING clause fetches all the rows and only then filters the selected rows, this would eat up lots of system resources and time. Thus as far as possible do not make use of HAVING clause in select query.
eg.
[sourcecode language='sql']
select *
from emp
where emp_name = ‘Bond’
having emp_id = ‘007’
[/sourcecode]
Instead use -
[sourcecode language='sql']
select *
from emp
where emp_name = ‘Bond’
and emp_id = ‘007’
[/sourcecode]

Avoid using DISTINCT and use EXISTS instead
eg.
Normal Query -
[sourcecode language='sql']
select DISTINCT emp_id, emp_name
from company C, emp E
where C.gid = E.emp_id
[/sourcecode]

Optimized Query -
[sourcecode language='sql']
select emp_id, emp_name
from emp E
where EXISTS (select ‘X’
from company C
where C.gid = e.emp_id );
[/sourcecode]

EXISTS processes faster as the query will be terminated once the sub-query has been satisfied .

Make use of DECODE to Reduce Processing
The DECODE statement avoids repetitive scanning of the same rows and the joins to the same table.
eg:
[sourcecode language='sql']
select SUM(SAL)
from emp
where dept_num = 007
AND emp_name LIKE ‘BOND%’;
[/sourcecode]

The same query can be optimized as
[sourcecode language='sql']
select
SUM(DECODE(dept_num,007, SAL, NULL)) D007_SAL,
from emp
where emp_name LIKE ‘BOND%’;
[/sourcecode]

DECODE can also be made used in place of GROUP BY or ORDER BY clause.

Some fast tips -

Avoid using of OR and instead make use of UNION -
Consider the use of UNION instead of OR in the WHERE clauses. Using OR on an indexed column causes the optimizer to perform a full-table scan rather than an indexed retrieval.

Avoid using of NOT when ever dealing with Indexed Columns
Reason:
Whenever NOT is made use of, a full-table scan is performed and it wont be using the index.
Indexes are built on the records which exists in a table, and not on which does not exist in a table.

The following statement will never use the index on emp_id column
[sourcecode language='sql']
select * from
emp
where emp_id not like ‘9%’
[/sourcecode]

Avoid usage of ‘!‘ operator use ‘>‘ instead
eg.
[sourcecode language='sql']
select *
from emp
where emp_id != 007
[/sourcecode]

Optimize by using :
[sourcecode language='sql']
select *
from emp
where emp_id > 0
[/sourcecode]

Avoid usage of ‘||‘ operator use ‘AND‘ instead
eg.
[sourcecode language='sql']
select *
from emp
where emp_name || emp_id = ‘BOND007’
[/sourcecode]

Optimize by using :
[sourcecode language='sql']
select *
from emp
where emp_firstname = ‘BOND’
AND emp_id = ‘007’
[/sourcecode]

Avoid usage of ‘TO_CHAR‘ and use ‘TRUNC‘ instead
eg.
[sourcecode language='sql']
select *
from emp
where to_char(emp_joindate,’mmddyyyy’) < to_char(sysdate,’mmddyyyy’)
[/sourcecode]

Optimize by using :
[sourcecode language='sql']
select *
from emp
where emp_joindate < trunc(sysdate)
[/sourcecode]

Avoid usage of ‘*’ instead make use of primary key or non null index column
eg.
[sourcecode language='sql']
select count(*) From emp
[/sourcecode]

Optimize by using :
[sourcecode language='sql']
select count (primary_key or non null INDEX column ) from emp
[/sourcecode]

Changing Philanthropy scene in India

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

When you ask any Indian about charity and if they practice it in their lives, they always say that Indians have been practicing charity for ages. True and False. Charity has been a part of our culture for times immemorial but is that really charity or more like pitying others. Traditionally, we have been giving alms to beggars, food to hungry, leftovers to servants and animals. Very few have built temples, schools, colleges, orphanages, old age homes, widow homes and so on.

With the advent of 21st century, charity has also evolved in India. Alongside learning the western ways of living and earning, we are beginning to learn western ways of charity – the so called Philanthropy. We have begun to understand the difference between Charity and Philanthropy. Businesses are feeling responsible to society as they should and are trying to do their bit. Individuals and HNIs are going the philanthropic way rather than the charity way.

So how is Charity different from Philanthropy?

Charity mostly comes out of pity. Philanthropy comes out of an intention to make a better society for everyone. Charity as we traditionally know is small in-kind help to poor and the needy. It is often initiated out of emotions and is reactionary to some experience. Philanthropy is an attempt at trying to solve a social problem in a long term fashion. It is the result of understanding and analysis of a situation which is not befitting a living being.

Today, we have a well developed social sector in India. It still has a lot to learn and grow but we have come a long way. The NGO world is divided into grassroots NGOs, donors, consultants, and fundraising mediators. I will briefly cover the role of fundraising mediators and talk about leaders in this area.

With fund raising becoming more and more challenging and the most important requirement for the NGOs, existence of fundraising mediators have come about. With increasing competition in the social sector, fundraising has become very sophisticated and competitive. More and more NGOs are looking for higher contributions. These individuals or organizations assist NGOs with raising funds from donors – individuals, businesses, foundations, govt and UN agencies.

Charities Aid Foundation India (CAFI) – http://www.cafindia.org, Give India – http://www.giveindia.org, National Foundation for India (NFI) – http://www.nfi.org.in are a few such intermediaries who have raised millions for NGO sector in last 15 years of their existence. They are actually social investment advisors to their donors and not actually fund raisers for NGO sector. They advise the donors as to where the donor should put their money to get the maximum impact or social return on investment (SROI).

Honda Jazz India

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Honda Jazz will be seen drifting on the Indian roads joining the race with Swift,Getz,U VA,Indica,Fusion,Punto & Fabia.Though its a premium Hatchback it is slightly bigger with 1.2L petrol engines in the B-Segment.This MPV style hatchback has ample head & leg room to accommodate five adults easily.Modern & innovative design with performance & reliability makes it more of practical car to own.

Its interiors are equally matched with its ergonomics. The cabin has been refined with better quality plastics, more supportive seats with high quality fabric and an adjustable steering that gives a better driving position. A new dashboard is easier on the eye, while passengers in the back seats will appreciate the increased length. One thing which it scores easily over its rivals is its unique "Magic Seat System".The fuel tank is shifted below the front seat which substantially increases the space at the rear with 43 liters of boot space. With this the seats at the rear folds aside to give a large storage space & roomier cabin making it a perfect family car. Its sharp design with neat triangular windows fits well in the front for a better visibility.Built on Honda city platform it has a stiffer chassis making it a more stable while cruising.

Technical Review:
Jazz comes with 1.2L,1.3L,1.4 & 1.5L in the global market. The engine which is an Intelligent Dual & Sequential Ignition (i-DSI) has two spark plugs which ensures the efficiency of the combustion process.Ignition timing is optimised according to the engine load & speed which results in better fuel efficiency.

The 1.2L pumps in 77BHP of power making it a peppy one to drive it.185/55 R15 tyres with all wheel disc brakes ensures enough grip though we have an option of ABS in other variants. Other features like AC,Power steering, power windows are standard & music system, airbags, ABS,alloys becomes optional with variants.

Expected Price: 1.2L Petrol would be within 6 Lakhs & 1.5L Diesel would be around 7 – 7.5 Lakhs. This combination is being worked to gain the excise benefit from the government. We need to wait & watch the strategy Honda adopts for their first entry into already crowed small car segment.

It should be in India around second half of 2008. So lets wait to get Jazzed!!!!!!!!!!
